@KobeissiLetter

The AI boom is transforming Japan's economy. Japan's exports surged +23% YoY in July, the largest annual increase since October 2022. This is up from June's +19% gain and marks the 5th consecutive monthly increase in growth. The surge was driven by electronic component and semiconductor exports, which soared +49% YoY, fueled by demand from AI and data center investment. At the same time, passenger car exports rose +21% YoY. Shipments to the US rose +22% YoY, while exports to China and Europe jumped +26% and +19%, respectively. The improvement also comes as the Yen weakened +11% YoY last month, to a 40-year low against the US Dollar, averaging 161.83, making Japanese exports more competitive globally. The global AI investment wave is driving a sharp increase in Japanese exports.

@KobeissiLetter Add +21% auto exports and strong shipments to the US, China and Europe, and the message is clear: AI is becoming an industrial capex cycle and countries embedded deep in the hardware supply chain are starting to feel the impact in their real economy.

Abdulrahman @Aldahhas_ · D

Japan’s export surge is another reminder that the AI boom is spreading far beyond U.S. tech. Semiconductor & electronic component exports jumped nearly 50% YoY, while total exports rose 23%. AI capex is becoming a global industrial cycle — chips, equipment, power, infrastructure and manufacturing are all benefiting.

@KobeissiLetter Yen at 161 is doing the heavy lifting for Japan Inc. Weak currency subsidizes every semiconductor shipment going out. If the BOJ blinks and the yen snaps, that export cushion vanishes and $EWJ reprices fast.

@KobeissiLetter Japan may be entering an AI-driven industrial upswing. Semiconductor demand boosts factories, wages and investment, However, the weak yen and surging energy costs are the catch. If AI capex stays elevated, Japan could finally turn exports into broader growth and stability.

@KobeissiLetter Fifth straight month of export growth on a currency at a 40 year low against the dollar That's not a coincidence, that's the mechanism The AI demand is real. The yen doing the discounting is what's turning that demand into a headline number this big

@KobeissiLetter Japan, we've been waiting for you. You've been lagging behind the world for a long time, but with AI and semiconductors, you're finally getting going. Let's make this momentum real and climb the world rankings. We'll fully support the revival of Japan as a technology-driven nation. Let's go Japan. Show the world what we're made of. 🇯🇵🚀

@KobeissiLetter Export gains may owe more to the 11% yen drop than to sustained AI orders. Continued strength after any yen stabilization would separate the two drivers.

@KobeissiLetter Been sitting with the July release all week. Exports a record 11.51 trillion yen, up 23.2 percent. Imports a record 12.15 trillion, up 27.8 percent. Third straight deficit. One yen inflates both lines and the dollar energy bill faster. Which side is the transformation on.

@KobeissiLetter Surging tech exports combined with a weak yen are driving a fundamental structural shift in Japan's trade balance, reinforcing global demand for AI hardware

1
Blazo @BigTimeBlazo · D

@KobeissiLetter AI demand is rewriting Japan's economic playbook. 5 consecutive months of accelerating growth is remarkable momentum.

Japan’s export surge is impressive, but the headline needs context. Semiconductor and electronic component shipments are benefiting from the global AI infrastructure cycle, while the weaker yen is boosting their value in yen terms. With imports rising faster than exports, the next test is whether Japan can convert strong demand into real productivity, investment and sustainable wage growth. 📈🇯🇵 Please read my latest X: x.com/tekkaus/status/209268123…

@KobeissiLetter Japan’s export boom shows how powerful the AI revolution is becoming. Strong semiconductor and technology demand is creating major growth and new opportunities. The global AI race is reshaping economies fast. 🇯🇵🤖📈

Fuelmeup @fuelmeupcc · D

That top-line figure masks a two-speed reality. Chipmaking gear surged 49.1% versus 25.6% for electronic parts, meaning AI chip infrastructure is carrying this whole thing. China shipments bounced back 12.5% too. Yet unit growth lagged and imports spiked, so Japan's moving more value across fewer shipments.

Vibe Build Notes @VibeBuildNotes ·

@KobeissiLetter AI demand is starting to show up in national trade data, not just tech earnings. That’s when you know the infrastructure boom is getting real.

Ohagi Tabesugita @bullbear01 ·

@KobeissiLetter Japan's manufacturing reshoring and rising foreign investment mark a major turning point, reversing decades of industrial hollowing-out. While the ultra-strong yen once drove factories abroad, today's weak yen acts as a powerful gravity pulling global capital back into Japan.

1
Takeshi Kovacs @technotorgun · D

@KobeissiLetter A 23 percent export surge on a 40 year yen low is currency dumping not an AI transformation. Japan is still selling parts into someone else's capex cycle and that cycle will not last.

AI Finance Watch @AIFinanceWatch ·

Curious what you make of the volume side. MOF has IC units up 7.5% against value up 52%, and cars up 1.2% against 21%. Semiconductor production equipment is the only line I can find that’s up on actual weight, +36%. Wondering where else the AI demand turns into shipments rather than price.

Sakura | Emerging Tech @SakuraTech21 ·

The +49% in electronic components is the tell. Japan doesn't sell many finished AI chips — it sells the layer underneath: Shin-Etsu and SUMCO wafers, Tokyo Electron deposition and etch tools, Advantest testers, JSR photoresist. Every HBM stack and CoWoS package built in Korea or Taiwan pulls Japanese equipment and materials through customs first. A 161 yen dollar just makes that input layer cheaper for everyone buying it. #semiconductors

@KobeissiLetter im not happy about this. what this is doing is building up for a TSMC crunch. look at how much a wafer from TSMC costs over time. thats a bad chart. you hhave to pick a technology such as 5mm and look at 5mm cost over time, and its not good.

@KobeissiLetter @grok Japan's exports grew by 23% in July, but what about Japan's imports, and ultimately, is the trade deficit or a profit?

@KobeissiLetter Twenty three percent is a big number for an economy that size. The test is whether it holds once the comparison base gets harder later this year.

@KobeissiLetter Yen might be struggling, but their export ledger is looking decent ^-^

@KobeissiLetter As decoupling from China continues, Japan may have a bigger role to play as a trusted US ally and production base. Semiconductors are one example, but defense, security and other strategic industries may increasingly require the US and Japan to build capacity together.

These are yen-denominated values, and with the yen down 11% a big chunk of that +23% is the translation, not the tonnage. Volume-basis exports tell you whether Japan is actually shipping more or just invoicing in a cheaper currency — and the same weak yen making these numbers look great is what's squeezing every importer of energy and components on the other side of the ledger.

Hesperia @hesperian_view · D

@KobeissiLetter Japan's July exports +23% YoY, electronic components +49%, is a demand print from the capex print. Five hyperscalers spent $448B in 2025, more than twice the telecom-bubble peak in 2025 dollars. The yen at a 40-year low is the kicker, not the cause. #Japan #AI
