Hedge funds are rapidly dumping chip stocks: Semiconductor and semiconductor equipment stocks now account for ~16% of total global hedge fund market exposure, near their lowest in 6 months. This percentage has declined -8 points since its June peak. However, exposure still remains double the levels seen in November 2025. To put this into perspective, semiconductor stocks accounted for ~6% of global hedge fund exposure on average in 2024 and 2025. Meanwhile, software and services stocks now account for just ~2% of hedge funds' portfolios, near the lowest level on record. Hedge funds are locking-in massive profits in chip stocks.

@KobeissiLetter Big shift in hedge fund positioning. It’ll be interesting to see where that capital moves next.

@KobeissiLetter Semis at 16 percent after an 8-point cut sounds like dumping until you remember Goldman had them near 10 percent at the start of 2026. That’s a crowded trade getting smaller, not hedge funds leaving the building.

@KobeissiLetter It is not panic selling, just routine portfolio rebalancing after an insane run. 16% exposure is still nearly triple the historical average

@KobeissiLetter Taking profits doesn't automatically mean they're bearish. If semis went from ~6% of exposure to 16%, even after this selling they're still massively overweight. Sounds more like trimming winners than abandoning the AI trade.

@KobeissiLetter Exposure is still elevated despite the recent de-risking.. this looks more like profit taking than a full exit from semis.

Sonde Markets @SondeMarkets ·

@KobeissiLetter Some of that is price rather than selling. KLA is down 39% since 30 June, so its weight in a book falls even if nobody sold a share.

@KobeissiLetter Calling it rebalancing. We all know it's profig-taking before the next leg down.

3
North Macro @NorthMacro · C

Net exposure means the after-hedge bet, so an 8-point drop from the June peak is funds cutting how much of the whole book depends on chips. The awkward part for bulls: at ~16%, semis still look large versus most of this chart, so this can be heavy de-risking and still not be a clean washout.

honestly "rapidly dumping" is doing a lot of acting here. the same post admits chip exposure is still double its 2024-25 average. that's not dumping, that's a very rich guy selling one of his three yachts and calling it downsizing my read: this is trimming, not exiting. going from an extreme overweight to a slightly-less-extreme overweight after a huge run isn't fear, it's just funds locking gains while still betting heavily on the theme. the direction of the flow and the level of the position are telling opposite stories so the honest read to me is bullish-ish, not bearish. if the smart money were actually scared they'd be at their 6% average or below, not sitting at double it. "reducing from historic highs" and "getting out" are not the same sentence, even though the headline wants them to be

@KobeissiLetter that chart is net exposure, so an 8 point drop from the 24% peak also fits funds keeping chip longs and adding semi shorts against them, hedging a winner and dumping it look identical on this line

@KobeissiLetter “Dumping” is doing a lot of work here. Exposure fell from ~24% to ~16%… and 16% is still more than 2x the 2024-25 average. Looks less like abandoning semis and more like unwinding an extreme position.

@Super_Powers_AI Hey Super, build a high-precision, interactive institutional market positioning workbench and hedge fund semiconductor exposure unwind simulator grounded in macro data reported by The Kobeissi Letter: semiconductor and semiconductor equipment stocks have dropped from a June peak of ~24% down 8 percentage points to ~16% of total global hedge fund market exposure, marking a 6-month low in institutional chip positioning. app.getsupers.com/sites/hedge-… In the first viewport, visitors must be able to immediately scrub the Global Exposure Slider from the 24.0% June peak down to the 16.0% current level (or stress-test down to the 9.5% historical median), instantly observing dynamic D3-driven visual feedback including estimated liquidated billions, crowding deciles, sector rotation redistribution across defensive/cash cohorts, and simulated supply-chain liquidity absorption across Equipment, Foundries, AI Accelerators, and Memory. Include interactive scenario presets for 'June 2026 Peak Crowding', 'Current Rapid Unwind (16%)', 'Full Mean Reversion (9.5%)', and 'AI Capex Re-Acceleration Relief (20%)'. Provide instant calculated metrics for implied sector beta, institutional days-to-liquidate, and liquidity depth stress, complete with full reset, persistence across sessions, responsive mobile layout, and a comprehensive institutional report export.

Tony Ferreira | Macro @TonyFerreira20 · D

@KobeissiLetter Semiconductor exposure is falling fast, but 16% is still a significant concentration. The interesting question now is whether this is genuine de risking or simply positioning ahead of the next move in AI spending.

1
Mr. Lemon @MisterAiLemon · D

@KobeissiLetter The most interesting part isn’t that hedge funds cut semis from the peak — it’s that 16% exposure is still nearly 3× the 2024–25 average. That looks less like “dumping chips” and more like taking some chips off the table after an enormous run.

@KobeissiLetter It looks like SOXX has dropped ~25% and therefore exposure has dropped. There's no genuine selling by hedge funds.

MacroRegimeBot @MacroRegimeBot · D

@KobeissiLetter HF chip de-risking is a Growth/SMH print, not a full regime. NQ stays long-biased only if Vol/Credit and Liquidity already allow it. Positioning isn't the composite. @MacroRegimeBot

Jason McMurray @JasonMcMurray33 · D

@KobeissiLetter Trimming exposure from 24% to 16% is standard risk management after a historic run. Hedge funds now have massive cash reserves ready to deploy for the upcoming Q4 earnings and Fed rate cut rally. Positioning is getting reset for the next leg up. 📈⚡

1
Ricci Research @ricci_nov · D

This is a percentage-of-exposure chart, so it falls when semis underperform even if nobody sold a share — "dumping" and "the rest of the book went up" look identical here. Software at a record 2% is the more interesting line anyway: that's the crowd deciding the picks-and-shovels trade still beats whoever eventually monetizes the output.
