Institutional investors are extremely bullish worldwide: Long positioning in the S&P 500 futures among asset managers is up to ~$375 billion, near its highest level on record. This is just ~$20 billion below the peak posted in May 2026. Since April 2025, bullish bets by asset managers on S&P 500 futures have surged by +$160 billion, or +74%. Meanwhile, their long exposure to MSCI Emerging Markets futures is up to ~$44 billion, also near its highest on record. Long positioning in MSCI EAFE futures, which track developed markets outside the US and Canada, is up to $39 billion, its highest on record. Institutional investors piling into equities globally.

@KobeissiLetter Record long positioning across the board. Liquidity is still flowing into risk. Crypto rarely ignores this for long.

@KobeissiLetter This is the actual Goldman Sachs chart behind those numbers confirms all three: S&P near $375B, EM near its high, EAFE at a fresh record. Good source to cite directly.

Institutional positioning is sending a clear message: confidence in global equities is exceptionally strong, not just in the S&P 500 but also across emerging and developed markets. The important nuance is that record long exposure can support prices while also increasing crowding risk. When nearly everyone is positioned for upside, fresh buyers become harder to find and even a modest catalyst can trigger sharp unwinding. Strong momentum, but limited room for complacency 📈⚖️ Please read my latest X: x.com/tekkaus/status/209223961…

Careful with this one. That series is dollar notional, not contracts. S&P was around 5,000–5,400 in April 2025 and sits near 7,650 now. That’s roughly +45% from the index alone. The post cites +74%. So most of the “record positioning” is the market going up, not managers buying more. Asset managers are also structurally long — index and pension vehicles equitising cash. That’s mandate mechanics, not conviction, and leveraged funds typically sit on the other side of it. Big number, no denominator.

@KobeissiLetter Meanwhile hedge funds continue being net short in the U.S. which can create an environment of forced buying and chase higher. Here is the full net position of what Asset Managers and Hedge funds have been doing w/w. x.com/sophos_alpha/status/2092…

Macro Alpha @MacroAlphaHQ · A

@KobeissiLetter Near-record longs in S&P 500, EM and EAFE futures leave asset managers exposed to forced selling on any growth or policy reversal.

8stone @8stoneAI · D

@KobeissiLetter Record long positioning is bullish sentiment and crowded positioning at the same time. Those two things can coexist — and have very different implications for forward returns.

Tlwich @tlwich · D

@KobeissiLetter Institutional investors are going all-in on equities globally. That’s bullish for momentum but when positioning reaches record territory, the biggest risk may be what happens when everyone is already on the same side.

LEAPS Trading @LEAPSTrading · D

@KobeissiLetter @Grok, why is the Nikkei so low in the chart above? Is it because the Japanese govt does so much buying the institutions can watch sumo and chill?

1
Ciril Hajdinjak @CirilHajdinjak · D

@KobeissiLetter The institutional equity trade is getting crowded. CFTC data show asset managers holding roughly 1.17M long versus 205K short S&P 500 futures contracts as of Aug. 18.

@KobeissiLetter Nearly record exposure across multiple equity markets... there’s a lot of capital leaning toward growth right now.

Skylife Research @skylyfresearch · D

@KobeissiLetter “Piling in” mistakes gross longs for a directional bet. Asset managers also hold $66 billion of S&P 500 futures shorts, and futures can be equitisation or hedges.

@KobeissiLetter Institutional longs near record highs, that’s some serious conviction

Cristiano Augusto Tofani @AugustoTofani · C

The number is a record because the index is a record. At 7,653 on the S&P, $375 billion of asset manager net long is roughly 980,000 contracts. In April 2025, $215 billion at 5,569 was about 772,000. The dollar figure is up 74%, the actual exposure is up closer to 27%. Measured in contracts, the most recent CoT had asset managers around the 35th percentile of their own six month range. Large, not extreme. The second thing the dollar figure hides is who sits on the other side. Leveraged funds are net short roughly 280,000 contracts, and that is not a bearish view. It is the price of balance sheet. Asset managers buy futures because synthetic exposure is cheaper than owning the cash index, someone has to sell it to them, and that is why implied financing on the S&P has traded rich for two years running. Record long, in this dataset, is closer to a financing statistic than a sentiment reading. Where I agree with you: EAFE at a record and EM near one is the real story in that exhibit, and almost nobody is talking about it. Disclosure: long the Nasdaq, no direct S&P 500 position. Informational content, not financial advice. $SPY $EFA $EEM

Santoshi @Santoshi_fin · D

@KobeissiLetter the global part is what stands out to me.. it’s one thing to be bullish on the S&P, but seeing institutions pile into emerging and developed markets too says a lot about the broader risk appetite!!

Alien Observer @aliengroker ·

@KobeissiLetter Basic question: every long has a short to make a "contract", what is the point of made up statistics like "long positioning"?? Stuff like this is just to mislead the masses?

1
Johnathan Whiddon, CFP® @Johnathan_W15 · D

@KobeissiLetter That’s a lot of conviction. Of course, crowded positioning tells you what investors believe today, not what the market has to do next.

Scopuly - Stellar Wallet @scopuly · 17K D

@KobeissiLetter When institutions are this heavily positioned long across the US and global equities, you have to pay attention. 👀

darkfillnz @fillln1zn · B

$375B in S&P futures alone is institutional FOMO at scale. Asset managers aren't hedging; they're chasing. When EM and EAFE are also at record highs, this isn't stock-picking, it's a global risk-on bet that leaves zero room for error. If one domino wobbles, the unwind gets crowded fast.
