Called this one nine days ago: an emergency fund has a bottom. Now it's official, lowest SPR level since 1983. The reserve exists for actual emergencies, and it's being spent to keep gas prices quiet during what everyone still calls "ordinary diplomacy." Nothing about diplomacy costs this much oil.

@KobeissiLetter Ties into something worth watching on this side too, UK petrol prices barely track oil anyway, duty and margins matter more than the crude price itself. If a tighter reserve pushes crude back up, it won't take much to erase what little relief pump prices had left.

@KobeissiLetter Given the lower limit is around 70m bbl, and consumption of 6m/wk, there are another 38 weeks in reserve. Iran's economy is in complete collapse, the leadership of Iran is disarray rife with in-fighting. I am hopeful this thing will be over in that time-frame.

This is the aftermath of the 172M-barrel exchange program launched after the Strait of Hormuz closure earlier this year. Companies borrowed that oil and are contractually obligated to return it (with an 18-24% premium) between late 2026 and 2028, so the SPR is on track to refill, just not immediately. Still, at ~299M barrels the reserve now covers a much thinner emergency cushion than the 700M+ capacity implies

@KobeissiLetter And just think about the leverage Canada has, they supply about 5.5 M barrels per day, or almost 25% of the US oil demand... Carney, give Trump a call, he is getting squeezed as SPR falls below 300 M B, and oil companies haven't replaced a drop. Refineries need a break soon.
