@Barchart Foreign cash is the quiet bid under the long end. Japan trimming even 1% of that stash sends $TLT spreads blowing out. That pressure leaks straight into equity valuations.

Confirmed and matches, this is the actual Visual Capitalist chart, sourced from June 2026 Treasury data. One genuinely important number missing from this list though, the single largest holder of US debt isn’t a foreign country at all, it’s the Federal Reserve itself, holding around $4.4 trillion, roughly four times what Japan holds. Foreign countries combined only account for about 20% of total US debt, most of it is held domestically.

@Barchart Not anywhere close to 40 trillion. Maybe we should start talking about the fact that we owe $39 trillion to our own bank. Because some small hat people tricked us into giving up the right to print our own money.

@Barchart The more interesting story is the UK jumping to #2 at $940B while China keeps quietly reducing.

@Barchart Japan and U.K. are going to get smoked by the incoming US default. There is a non negligible chance this admin will just walk away and start again, regardless of the consequences.

@Barchart Better keep Japan happy

@Barchart Japan remaining the largest foreign holder is significant. @DigiMaaya thinks sovereign debt flows can reveal broader shifts in global capital allocation.

@Barchart And Japan is on the first place with most paper losses as Treasurie yields has soared. It is as additional problem to about 25% of the budgets % payments for gebt service

@Barchart The biggest holder of US debt being overseas says a lot about dollar dependence.
