chinese models topped us models in token usage on openrouter in march and have been up only since. how real are the chinese labs, and what do they mean for the frontier moats? this and more in delphi research's latest report from @accelxr on evaluating the china labs. x.com/ceterispar1bus/status/20…

China’s AI hardware disadvantage is turning efficiency into a competitive advantage. Chinese labs have spent the past several years trying to keep pace with the frontier under tighter restrictions on Nvidia’s most advanced chips. Restricted access made it harder to improve models by simply adding more compute. Labs had to look for gains in how models were trained and run. Much of that work focuses on improving chip utilization during training and designing models that require less compute and memory. Post-training methods are also extracting more reasoning capability from existing base models. Chinese AI progress cannot be reduced to distillation. These systems change how models are built and run while lowering training and serving costs. That cost advantage changes how models compete. Many workloads do not require the strongest model available. A lower-cost option can win once it performs well enough for the task. Several Chinese models already combine competitive performance with substantially lower prices. China is much closer to running competitive models on domestic chips than it is to training them from scratch. Frontier training still depends on advanced hardware China cannot yet fully replace. The next generation of Chinese models will show how far better software and more efficient architectures can narrow that gap.

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr The efficiency gains from Chinese labs are becoming hard to ignore

Hedge @Never_Hedgee ·

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr Open router is less than 1% of total token traffic.

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr U should firstly know 99% tokens don’t go through openrouter lol

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr Isnt it just because they are so crappy it takes a lot of tokens and mistakes and loops to get the task done? Opus makes enough mistakes, fable one shots. I cant imagine the tokens a cheap open model wastes

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr The efficiency gap is everything - open-weight winning on token share and cost while frontier labs scale differently. We actually went deeper on what this split means here: x.com/AGTPinsights/status/2092…

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr This is absolutely predictable. I use two Claude Max 20x plans. I experiment with cheap open Chinese API stuff. Even then, it's not through OpenRouter.

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr "chinese models topped charts in cheaply processing tokens" while the american companies are the ones making the money x.com/rob3rtjohn/status/209267…

Token usage on a routing platform is a reasonable signal, but it may be measuring cost sensitivity more than capability preference. Developers often route to Chinese models because they're significantly cheaper per token, not necessarily because they're technically superior. Worth separating "adoption" from "preference" before drawing conclusions about frontier moats.

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr quite happy w/ k3 for the majority of my workload and 5.6 sol on occasion. have not touched an anthropic model since like ~5 months ago, feels great

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr @what’s the cheapest Grok cost on OpenRouter currently ?

Douglas Swift @SwiftMacro · B

I keep seeing China’s hardware constraint described as an advantage. Give me the same software efficiency without the hardware constraint. Chinese labs deserve enormous credit for doing more with less. But being forced to do more with less isn’t an advantage over the country that can do more with more.

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr Chinese labs gaining ground this fast definitely changes the frontier equation

Mr. John Smith @MrJ0hnSmith ·

@ceterispar1bus @accelxr This should be called "the Anthropic effect"

@accelxr @ceterispar1bus Big labs don't only serve frontier models. GPT 5.6 luna is extremely price efficient. Also for consumer, Codex + Claude subscription provide insane value (10-50x the tokens for sub cost) and for enterprise they want stable safe compute and top tier support from US labs.

@accelxr @ceterispar1bus The archetype of the buyer constantly routing to cheapest models (different personality and workflow strength each) is pretty niche.

@uglyinternettroll @spamlorde ·

@Rouge_Encore @ceterispar1bus @accelxr Im not convinced. All the 5 different models influencers are pretty scourge worthy.
