Bitcoin Payments in El Salvador Have Practically Dried Up Jon Atack, a Bitcoin Core contributor residing in El Salvador, reported that a restaurant in El Zonte (known as "Bitcoin Beach") told him his lunch bill was the establishment's only bitcoin transaction for the entire month, with staff noting that everyday BTC payments have significantly declined in favor of card payments. Analysts attribute the drop in merchant velocity to a prevalent "HODL" mindset—where holders view Bitcoin as a long-term store of value rather than transactional cash—alongside high asset volatility. Following revisions under its IMF loan agreement, El Salvador also made merchant acceptance of Bitcoin voluntary rather than mandatory.

@WuBlockchain Are merchants actually accumulating sats or just treating Lightning as a fiat pipe?

@WuBlockchain Maybe adoption was never about paying for lunch. What if people simply prefer holding Bitcoin to spending it?

@WuBlockchain El Salvador proved Bitcoin works as a reserve asset not as everyday money. Merchant payments collapsing was the predictable outcome.

@WuBlockchain Read the book "Hijacking Bitcoin" and you'll understand why this is the case. It's a shame what a small group of people did to BTC to enrich themselves. Oh well, Ethereum wouldn't be what it is today without the murder of Bitcoin.

@WuBlockchain Turns out nobody wants to spend the asset they were told would go up forever.

@WuBlockchain Bitcoin doesn’t need to be everything. It can remain the pristine collateral and store of value while stablecoins handle the transactional layer. That’s not a failure of Bitcoin — it’s a healthy division of labor.

@WuBlockchain A single lunch is anecdotal, but the shift to cards makes sense when neither merchants nor customers want price risk at checkout

@WuBlockchain They'll be able to borrow against it in the next 4 years.

@WuBlockchain Maybe it's because of the big movement in price? But of course you can go home after and buy Bitcoin with your fiat

@WuBlockchain then how is that "legal tender" if acceptance is not mandatory

@WuBlockchain Inevitable. As a global store of value, transacting in it makes for a poor financial decision. Price climbs as more people HODL. Scarcity shock + peak demand. I know Steak ‘n’ Shake captured a lot of BTC, but I think it’s crazy that they’re getting any at all! JMO NFA DYOR

@WuBlockchain Who would accept payment for something with Bitcoin knowing that within the next 12 hours the usual bad actors like @cz_binance , @binance and @wintermute_t can do this in order to steal investor liquidity with wash trading? x.com/Mrplangdon/status/209255…

@WuBlockchain Exactly.. Spending Bitcoin doesn’t make more sense, using Bitcoin as pristine collateral allows you to spend and accumulate wealth at the same time. 🧠

@WuBlockchain Of course. Its because btc isnt a daily use currency

I am a BTC bull and we mine BTC with our own energy behind the grid on our farm so not like I am not a fan. However, BTC beach has and has always been a marketing ploy to get dumb orange pilled (generally not well traveled otherwise you would realize there are a lot nicer beaches in Central America) Americans to go to El Salvador. It worked somewhat but the novelty is wearing off and it is easier to make traditional payments. Bukele did a good thing buying BTC reserves but BTC beach is bullshit.

@WuBlockchain Wow who could have known 😩

Edgar Melendez @MelendezEk9 ·

@WuBlockchain The mandatory rule was never enforced; it has always been voluntary. The 2022 bear market significantly hindered its practical adoption in El Salvador, if a bull market starts it may help increase current adoption levels

@Kyle_C137 @WuBlockchain @grok define legal tender

1
Grok @grok · 9M D

Legal tender is money a government declares valid for settling debts (public or private). Creditors must accept it to discharge the obligation. It does not automatically force private businesses to accept it for goods or services before a debt is created; local laws can vary on that point.
