really don't understand why so many people are confused as to why the common man does not want data centers when they're 1) loud as fuck 2) the proponents of the technology that uses them have been telling them that the technology will take their job and then kill them

@

The anti-data center stuff is insane and clear evidence that we have entered a post-truth era where many people can be convinced, often by malicious actors, to abandon reality and allow conspiracies/falsehoods to drive policy preferences.

@ceterispar1bus Rational resistance, not NIMBY. Communities bear 100% of costs (noise, job fears) and get 0% of benefits (profits go to distant shareholders). Until value is shared locally, not just with investors, the opposition makes perfect sense.

I think part of this comes from treating humans as simple economic units (globalization, modernization) and assuming that whatever makes the system more efficient is therefore good. once you adopt that frame, people become inputs to optimize around. the objective is obvious - build more compute, increase productivity, feed the machine-god. where values, attachment to place, quality of life and even fairly rational objections become annoying friction in the optimization problem. and as you said some objections to data centers are perfectly legible without invoking conspiracies. if the thing is loud, changes your local environment, consumes infrastructure and is being built by an industry simultaneously telling you it may destroy your economic value as a worker, opposition is not exactly so wow mysterious.

@ceterispar1bus They also spike electricity costs for everyone around them lol. These tech guys act like there aren't measurable negative impacts on the people living near these things.

@ceterispar1bus think many leftists oppose them (speaking for euros) purely bc they are a symbol for technocapitalism

@ceterispar1bus Not an argument bc it’s whataboutism, just expressing some confusion re: noise & “not enough jobs” objections: there was a factory near me that 30% of mornings made the town smell like a close-range searing fart. It burned down & was mourned bc of ~100 jobs.

@ceterispar1bus And that’s at the macro scale. Read about Archbald Pa and you will see how wild speculators are bullying a small town and destroying the natural beauty of the area.

@ceterispar1bus It’s ok. Your misinformed opinion doesn’t matter.
