Not quite happy to see mdr in upi. Neft and Rtgs are free and well used. It should have a max absolute number like 5 rupees, or 0.2% whichever is lower. The cost isn't higher for higher numbers and at this volume even rs. 5 is good. Percent based mdr is like percent based brokerage...should be history.

@deepakshenoy They ought to ask wealthy farmers to pay something in direct taxes and continue keeping this free as public infrastructure. Makes no sense that farmers with 10-100+acres pay nothing and existing tax payers have to find a way to fund everything.

@deepakshenoy I think the mdr can be useful on rupay based credit cards. I think it already exists (1% or some such)

@deepakshenoy Will mdr be also applicable when I Fund my account @zerodha or @_groww ?

1
puneet @puneetkeshav ·

@deepakshenoy They don't even realize all the GST uplift is due to UPI payments. All the shopkeepers are showing minimum some cash and all the UPI sale forcefully which used to be cash earlier. That someone who has to pay should definitely be the government.

@deepakshenoy Switch to digital erupee

ninkozi @ninkozi ·

@deepakshenoy Moving to a percentage based MDR is effectively yielding authority to a rent-seeking oligarchy (or monopoly, if NPCI is the collector) and a failure of the government to live up to its role as a representative of the people's interests

Shashi Sachan @Sachan8574 · 12K

You could reply: > A flat cap on charges can make sense, especially for a high-volume digital payment system where marginal transaction costs are low. The key is to balance sustainability for payment providers with keeping UPI affordable and accessible for users and merchants. A transparent pricing framework would help maintain trust.

1
Harsh @PMISROPRYojna ·

@deepakshenoy Instead have an annual fees like debit cards have for n number of higher transactions.

@deepakshenoy Why don't use UPI data to find GST and Income tax evasion, also cost of Printing notes is reduced, They can think of Annual Subscription for high Level like Resturants , Shopping,Others

@deepakshenoy Americanisation. Convert all revenue streams to % of top line. Master/Visa type, they want to take few bips on gross flows in economy!! Even Worse than net GST by govt Remember MF request processing? CAMS pushed biz from fixed & per txn to AUM based years ago

@deepakshenoy First make them habitual of something by giving it free and then charge it. Good business strategy. But this will bring back cash expenditure back specially for small vendors and i wont blame them. I guess i will have to start carrying wallet again. :)

@deepakshenoy You would be surprised to know that NEFT and RTGS is in fact not free. The Sender / Receiver Bank have a fee agreement for compensation of the use of Banks OS. This of course gets indirectly billed in annual charges of bank

3
FundaLearner @RiyazSayed16 ·

@deepakshenoy Instead, they should let banks charge an annual fee of 100-500 for upi usage. Btw, i feel this move is under pressure from Trump as upi is earing away the share of visa and mastercard payments

Sahanshu Agrawal @sahanshu ·

@deepakshenoy How about an annual charge(optional), say 20 bucks per year for the account instead of per transaction. Just like a subscription. Suppose there are 500 million users and even 200 m choose this option, wouldn't this solve all problems??

Beytal 🥭 @navyogita ·

@deepakshenoy Cash is bad for any govt, printing cash costs more UPI saves some money for GOI MDR charges are inevitable, don't go bonkers on it. Visa, Mastercard charges much higher 3-4% to merchants hence merchants put min limit to accept the cc payment This is good for future infra NPCI

Malav Shah @malav_shah ·

@deepakshenoy Yes, there are ways to pay to specific merchants using NEFT. In an internet economy, NEFT like rails are not predominant as they are purpose built for account to account transfer, not for scaled merchant payment acceptance.

siddhant kumar @siddhantk12 ·

@deepakshenoy Point is transactions at customers end should be free by consumer law amendments. Let businesses adjust it in pricing or profit margin.

Beytal 🥭 @navyogita ·

@deepakshenoy Hmm, when you have 20 billion transactions, you need 💰 to maintain the infra. Govt is not responsible for that. Banks & RBI, merchants & Users are. Although this came from Modi surrendering due to visa/Mastercard pressure from US rather than monetary angle. Anyways cheers 🥂

Mann @Mann_ashar ·

@deepakshenoy How does this make sense - Bank will pay for something that we use without any incremental benefit - nobody is forcing to use UPI - one can use DC/CC ohh wait its already charging MDR🙂 also This 0.2-0.3% wont go to TPAP it would be between TPAP, banks of (acq nd merchnt) & NPCI

1
Mann @Mann_ashar ·

@deepakshenoy Again its free economy - capitalist economy One can switch to Cash if they want NEFT/RTGS if u dont mind spending 20 mins/trns But this TPAP made the ecosystem they deserve to charge for service What if u couldn’t charge for MF? Since it would lead to better financialisation

Flexible Capital ⭐ @flexifinHQ ·

Maybe we should keep a cap for very high ticket size txns. But can't keep a flat fee. Most large merchants don't pay (or pay a miniscule amount) Also- UPI frauds have been hitting the roof. Remitter banks/center is on the hook for that. If you think the risk is limited then maybe we should split the MDR accordingly bw the players?

1
Deepak Shenoy @deepakshenoy · 292K

@flexifinHQ Low flat fee for all 2000+ rupee transactions is a good point To check. You can tabulate the revenues each player and the upi ecosystem will make based on this?

1 1
Flexible Capital ⭐ @flexifinHQ ·

But that doesn't safeguard the acquirer from merchant side risk, nor the remitting bank from fraud risk Frankly we also need to think of the value larger merchants derive from this. Even at 25bps the cost is much lower than even DCs, not to mention cash I understand the point that the infra cost is the same for each txn. But then how to pay for those small paan shop txns?

2
amey @samsararunup ·

@flexifinHQ @deepakshenoy bro why are you defending the banks to make more money they gain a LOT of value from people keeping $ in their accounts to spend PLUS if it's such a big hassle they can just avoid providing the service

2
Flexible Capital ⭐ @flexifinHQ ·

It's not free money. There's a cost to all the services right from the app to the chequebook and branches. Plus it's not like it's being applied on P2P or small transactions Why should large companies like Amazon, Zomato etc get this for free? By that logic I shouldn't want them to get money too, right?

1
Rohit Pandit @itsrohitpandit ·

@navyogita @deepakshenoy If you think the government is responsible for printing money, MDR is a small cost to bear. They save on printing, transporting and handling cash, while digitisation improves tax compliance and GST collection. The government could make more from a digitised economy.

1
Beytal 🥭 @navyogita ·

@itsrohitpandit @deepakshenoy Agreed. Like it or not the Babus (IAS), Netaji don't agree, for them Cash economy is better for black market. US is very hard on profitability hitting their own company so we will get army twisted into this for 2 reasons
