I would largely agree that this was a “security bug in the social layer” because I wasn’t on this app until 2022 so I missed a lot of the cheerleading. When I arrived, I saw a lot of people warning about both NVK and Coinkite. The “problem” is none of those people were “pure” enough for the maxis. But I’ve never agreed with purity above all else. Many of the smartest people I know who are working in tech and in security are not “bitcoin maxis.” That’s a separate conversation. None the less, everyone’s concerns that I looked into were accurate and valid. As a result I not only never recommended Coldcard to a single person, I also warned anyone who would listen that I didn’t think it was a good choice. No one could have predicted the scale of this incompetence, gross negligence really, but I do hope the social layer improves its lense through which it’s willing to cooperate.
