@python_xxt is wrong. Ultimately, it's because high-speed rail can be used in conjunction with real estate speculation, while airports and airlines generally make a profit. High-speed rail is mostly a money-losing business, but the money lost by high-speed rail comes from the central government, while local governments make money by selling land in high-speed rail new towns.

@python_xxt If there are enough airplanes, the demand for high-speed rail isn't that great. That's the US. In China, high-speed rail was over-invested in, which hindered airplane development.

@python_xxt Regional airlines are like mediocre movies in theaters—they're passable but not competitive.

@python_xxt Is there any chance China will ever have a large aircraft? I seriously doubt it!

@python_xxt 中国的大飞机会有戏吗?

@python_xxt The problem is that even with domestically produced aircraft, the Ministry of Aviation still profits, while the Civil Aviation Administration still needs to buy them. Furthermore, domestically produced aircraft aren't necessarily cheaper.

SoloWing @SoloWing52 ·

@python_xxt There's a paradox in regional aviation: routes with high load factors are most likely within the coverage area of high-speed rail, and in places where high-speed rail doesn't reach, the load factor of civil aviation isn't much higher either.

original · zh

@python_xxt Declining population (reduced demand) Soaring debt (increased costs) High-speed rail everywhere (strong substitution) ...

@python_xxt No good at anything else, but number one at shifting blame. The Taipei-Kaohsiung high-speed rail journey only takes 1.5 hours, practically eliminating the domestic market. Taiwan still needs to buy planes, even though it doesn't produce any domestically. Taiwan, with a population of over 20 million, has three full-service airlines, all highly profitable. In 25 years, Air China's revenue was $24.2 billion with a loss of $490 million, while China Airlines' revenue was $6.5 billion with a profit of $500 million.

@python_xxt 别的不行,甩锅第一名。

@python_xxt The main problem is too many airlines. Subsidiaries have their own subsidiaries e.g. Xiamen, Shenzhen. One province has 2 airlines e.g. Shandong, Sichuan. Finally Hainan has too subsidiaries. CAAC should get its act together by getting rid of redundancy

@python_xxt High-speed rail is also suffering huge losses.
