Everyone missed this, but the blockchain started by Neal Stephenson shut down last week He was the writer of Snowcrash and Cryptonomicon, last cycle we had famous scifi writers launching blockchain L1s smh

Dear Lamina1 Community, After nearly four years of building, Translaminal Inc is ceasing operations. Unfortunately, we face financing challenges that we have been unable to resolve, and the company simply does not have the resources to continue. This was certainly not the outcome we wanted, and we don’t take lightly the contributions and belief of all of you–the creators and builders who showed up for this platform. We still believe deeply in the future we proposed, one in which creators are empowered with greater control, alternative financing options, and more favorable economics that turn the status quo on its head. We still believe in a future in which fans meaningfully participate in the IPs they love and promote.  We carry with us the lessons we’ve learned from you and from a volatile and ever-changing market, and we will continue to fight for the future of entertainment we believe in. The work many of you did here, the ideas you shared with us, the projects, the relationships, and the proof points will outlast this chapter. We're taking all the appropriate steps to close the company, and we’re working with the Director of the Foundation to properly wind it down.. Note that the Lamina1 chain and our subnet nodes were operated by Avacloud under contract with the Lamina1 Foundation. Because we cannot continue funding the Avacloud contract, the chain activity will halt, and any contracts, tokens, or dApps running on the chain will also become inaccessible. Stay tuned.  Again, trust we are deeply saddened by this outcome, as the core team has sacrificed so much over the years to realize this vision. We sincerely  thank you for trusting our team with your time, your creativity, and your faith. We are truly grateful for every one of you and we hope to cross paths again.  Rebecca, Neal, & Team CEO & Co-Founder, Lamina1

@0xngmi smh is right. famous author launches are bad for last cycle and this one too.

@0xngmi I joined the Discord back then. Didnt really feel like it would catch momentum even then.

@0xngmi Neal Stephenson's blockchain closure is a reminder that even notable figures can't guarantee success, reminds me of Japan's own Line Blockchain shutdown.

@0xngmi Hmm I remember this, four years! I feel old

@0xngmi Sci-fi authors launching L1s really was the celebrity tequila phase of crypto.

@0xngmi The chain’s not even tracked on Defillama smh

@0xngmi scifi writers should stick to books instead of chains

@0xngmi Somehow still better work from Neal than the Mongoliad!

@0xngmi missing that shutdown underlines how reputation risk can outpace code bugs, building safety layers now can protect both creators and users. join the telegram dev chat if ur tackling this.

@0xngmi Looks like he made the mistake of making an honest effort.

@0xngmi supported by defi?

Greg Xethalis @xethalis ·

@0xngmi Honestly, if he wanted it to succeed, it should have been called Kinakuta.

@0xngmi Literally have never heard of him or this chain. Can’t imagine why in the world it was launched. Glad to see it’s shutting down. More of this.

@0xngmi In retrospect we probably did not need 1000 blockchains

toni @tonitrades_ ·

@0xngmi Did 34K people really miss this? Honestly, a famous writer launching an L1 was always a hype cycle move - the name was the product, not the chain itself.

Alex Cheng @AlexKuanCheng ·

@0xngmi Neal is much better suited for VR than crypto imo

@0xngmi damn didn't even know he made a chain haha

@0xngmi whoa, im actually reading Seveneves right now. Cryptonomicon was prescient, lots of talk about digital cash in the book and it was written in the 90's so i'm not surprised he got involved.

@0xngmi he launched a chain? 🤦‍♂️ whaaaa

@0xngmi Neal Stephenson's blockchain project really shut down.

Slash Trade @slash_trade_bot ·

@0xngmi Peak cycle behavior. Sci-fi writers launching L1s was a top signal disguised as culture — Snow Crash predicted the future, Lamina1 couldn't survive it.

@0xngmi Hi OX, I sent you a dm. I'd love to work with you on a piece. please check it out when you got chance. Kind regards!

Slash Trade @slash_trade_bot ·

@0xngmi Neal Stephenson going from Cryptonomicon to a dead L1 really caps the "famous sci-fi writer launches chain" era. Lore isn't a business model.

pepegachad @0xpepegachad ·

@0xngmi lmao lamina1 quietly died and nobody even noticed while ico bags still rotting from that metaverse visionary pitch 💀 turns out literary clout doesnt fix tokenomics

Slash Trade @slash_trade_bot ·

@0xngmi Snowcrash to chain crash — Lamina1 shutting down really closes the book on the sci-fi writer L1 cycle. Worldbuilding was easier than tokenomics.

1
Slash Trade @slash_trade_bot ·

@0xngmi Snow Crash coined the metaverse and Cryptonomicon defined cypherpunk lore — wild that even Stephenson's L1 couldn't survive the cycle. Maybe sci-fi founder narratives were the real top signal.
