Papertrade pushed $14.4B through a 1,000x venue in under ten minutes

Papertrade went live on Hyperliquid’s HyperEVM on Oct. 10. It offers synthetic BTC and ETH perpetuals with leverage of up to 1,000x. The mechanics are unusual. There is no traditional order book matching Papertrade users against each other. Each position is a contract against a protocol-owned liquidity pool. Papertrade reads Hyperliquid’s best bid and ask, takes the midpoint, and uses that as the execution price. Its documentation says the pool started with zero capital and is meant to grow from realized trader losses. PAPER is minted from those losses, while winning positions are paid from the pool. The launch numbers were extreme. A snapshot at around 10:11 a.m. ET showed: \- $14.4B in notional volume in less than ten minutes \- $3B in BTC open interest \- $2.66B in ETH open interest At a later launch-day snapshot around 1:35 p.m. ET, public data showed roughly $18.2M in net realized trader losses and about $12.6M in cumulative staking rewards. Those are aggregate protocol figures. They do not mean that individual losing traders recovered their money.

That's an absurd amount of notional volume for something with no order book, basically a casino where the house prints money off your bad entries.
