SDD: Spite Driven Development

I love how AI has enabled this new category of "FU and your subscription, I'll build my own" personal apps. I've been recently using an Android app for a speech-to-text transcription that was supposed to be free and then out of the blue I get a notification saying I've used up all my words and that I have to subscribe to it to continue. Obviously this annoyed me, so I just launched Codex and told it, build me my own with open weights, open source models. It's pretty good and I love being able to do that with not too much effort and being able to escape abusive subscriptions. What are your spite driven projects like this one?

The sheer joy of side-stepping a paywall with a weekend build is unmatched. My last one was a simple expense tracker after the one I used locked multi-device sync behind a premium tier I didn't need. Took an afternoon and works exactly how I want it now.

honestly speech‑to‑text is an use case, for this 😂 once you have a decent local model running you do not have to worry about usage caps or sending recordings to some service. The best part is not having to ask permission to use your tools.
