Asking for a phone number before showing the product creates a trust problem

I’m building Pijnhol, which delivers personalised news updates by SMS. One useful piece of feedback was that asking someone to verify their number before they’ve seen a convincing example puts the commitment before the value. The change was to show topic-specific example texts on the homepage, so people can understand what would land in their messages before signing up. The lesson is about ordering: explain what someone receives before asking for access to a personal channel. How have others handled this when their product needs a phone number? Check out the link here if you're interested - pijnhol.com all idea and feedback welcome, thanks!

Isn't SMS text updates kinda expensive compared to whatsapp?

SMS can cost more per message, especially for international numbers, but it’s simpler because people don’t need another app or account. WhatsApp can be cheaper at scale, though it comes with its own setup and reach tradeoffs. I’m starting with SMS because the updates arrive in the same inbox people already use. Is cost the main thing that would make you prefer WhatsApp?
