Hockey as a bellwether, economy slowing down?

I’ve definitely been a perma bear and have been wrecked over the last night, and most likely for the foreseeable future. I’ve thought the economy has been in a precarious spot, but over the years have continued to see people spend high $xxx, and even $x,xxx for concerts and sporting events. If people are spending this, they are clearly fine. Might be localized to Vegas, but not even ticket-fraud-ster is buying up all of the tickets at Vegas golden knights home games. Since 2017-2018 there have been 352 home games and all but the last two games have sold out. Most notably it was the worst team but also one of the most popular teams the Toronto maple leafs that didn’t sell out and fell 1390 tickets shy (15977 out of 17367). Could just be Canadians sending a message. Or that Vegas is not the place to be. Or that the sky is falling short everything.

I'm Canadian. Are you saying Carney is a pdf file? He probably is, look what happened to his son
  8. u/foo_mar_t 1 18 hours ago
I was referring to trump. I assumed you were referring to Carney. I am also canadian. My mistake.
  9. u/Savings_Studio_5678 1 18 hours ago

I mean its back up by a larger trend of less Canadians traveling to the US

Canadians (I am one) can spend their money how they please but the self important, self righteous of my countrymen is pathetic. Our entire economy and security is based around the U.S. but we lose our minds and disparage the largest, most powerful country in the world for charging us a tarrfiff.

I'd be happy for us to become our own nation but that's not what Carney is doing when he floods our nation with Hindus and Muslims
  15. u/FlySociety1 1 18 hours ago
Tarrifs, threatening us, belittling us, being actively hostile to us. Spend your money how you please, its a free tarrif

And you'll do what instead, join the E.U? What kind of cuck move is that

Tariffs aside, You’re gonna get downvoted because this is Reddit and no one wants to address the fact that Canada’s entire economy is only half that of California alone.

Oh no, would say 9 in 10 Canadians agree. That 1 person in 10 lives in Alberta and has delusions of separating.

Canada is hurting right now. More than 70% of their trade exports go to the US, that is, until recently.
  27. u/OddAd7664 1 19 hours ago
The trade still goes there, it’s just more expensive for Americans to purchase it now.

Vegas is cooked for the younger generations. The best casinos on the planet - are on my phone. It's not going to be quick but puts on Vegas. For now the money is in the AI trade,

I look down on degenerate gamblers. I invest in the outcome of sporting events through the use of commodity futures contracts traded on highly liquid exchanges. Gambling is for suckers, commodity futures markets is where the smart money resides.
  34. u/Desperate_Main7391 1 18 hours ago
Invest in the outcome of sporting events….. 😂 what an idiot dude you are the degenerate gambler, the sucker, the complete 🤡 that doesn’t understand the basic definition of investing. Since you’re probably early 20s gambling your shit hourly wages from Wendy’s on hood or kalshi let copy paste the definition of investing: Investing means putting money or resources into assets with the expectation that they will grow in value or generate income over time. Apply that to what you’re doing, look at yourself in the mirror, and honestly tell yourself you need to stop being a degenerate gambler.

I have a system, bud. The commodity futures market is wildly mispriced because of liquidity provided by idiotic large fanbases like Nebraska, Washington and Texas that make returns that shatter traditional equity or commodities investing. It’s like taking candy from a baby investing in these teams to choke. I did almost get cooked on one game this year but closed my Michigan over Iowa position for 94 cents after commission late in the fourth quarter.

I think you're looking at it kinda wrong - I think Vegas realized a long time ago that they needed to be more than just casinos. That's why they've brought in professional hockey, football, women's basketball, and soon baseball. Not to mention a ton of other entertainment. I went there last month and had a great time, and spent very little time on casino gaming floors. Can confirm tour original point though - most people I saw on gaming floors were older.

For real though. The only people who talk about going to Vegas all the time are the people I work with near retirement age. Nobody young cares about it, aside from the odd bachelor party.

Generally, Canadians are limiting unnecessary travel to the US. Personally, I used to go at least once every year if not multiple times, and haven't been since, oh, let's say January 20, 2025.Vegas tourism has been down all year due to Canadians and EU citizens avoiding the US.
  44. u/CaesarLinguini 1 18 hours ago
Vegas is dead, $20/shot on the strip, and $300/night rooms are bullshit.
  45. u/Wonko-D-Sane 1 18 hours ago
nHL players literally would rather play in the IUS for tax reasons, with salary caps they make way less in maple syrup land, Canada is fucked evey way you look at it

It's a combo of Canadians still being pissed at Trump's tariffs and 51st state threats (source Canadian living in the US for the last 6 years) and for the last few years Vegas has shifted it's target demographic to take advantage of the K shaped economy (focusing on the top 10-20% incomes earns them the same amount of money without the volume of people). What do you get? Local sports (especially hockey) don't have the same volume of people to buy tickets. I'm not saying a recession isn't incoming but this has other explanations incoming recession.

Las Vegas committed suicide. Suicide should never be Plan A.
  49. u/_ShutUpLegs_ 1 18 hours ago
US is now a shit hole and people (Canadians) that might previously have gone to see their team play in Vegas and make a trip out of it aren't doing so anymore.
  50. u/Fffiction 1 18 hours ago
Scalpers/resellers are sitting back, that market has bottomed out badly and now that they’re not buying the initial seats you’re seeing the actual demand for tickets priced as they are in this economy. It doesn’t look good. Also look at MLS after hosting the World Cup in US/Canada/Mexico the MLS games I looked at this weekend were full of empty seats. Either again the pricing is off or the demand really isn’t there. NBA’s just starting pre-season I guess that’ll be another measure.
