inference got ~10x cheaper this year and almost nobody has repriced

there's a thread doing the rounds on hacker news about DeepSeek 4.1 Flash, and the thing that stood out to me wasn't the benchmark, it was the cost per million tokens. if you launched an AI feature 12 months ago you probably priced it around what inference cost then. a lot of us have not gone back and looked. i checked ours last week and the margin on the AI part of the product had roughly tripled without anyone touching it. two things worth doing if you are in the same spot: 1. pull your actual token spend per paying customer for the last 3 months, not your estimate. mine was about a third of what i assumed. 2. decide deliberately whether that becomes margin, a cheaper plan, or more generous limits on the existing plan. defaulting to margin is a choice too, just make it on purpose. the trap is leaving usage caps where they were. you end up with a product that feels stingy for no reason, and the customer has no idea the constraint stopped being real. anyone actually repriced off the back of this, or is everyone just quietly taking the margin?

Le scoop c'est surtout que tu as mis un an à regarder tes propres coûts. Personne ne baisse ses prix, à part pour faire un tweet.

More generous limits would be my choice here. If API costs go up again, adjusting a limit seems easier to explain than reversing a price cut.
