Sunday Reading - SPVs and Swaps, and how I believe the memes in 2024 were a warning to shorts.
So last year I was doing an analysis on the meme run DFV posted in 2024. This was because going back over them, something sparked in my brain because of work I did many years ago on a project that was a result of the 2008 recession. It was called “ring-fencing”, and I had to understand and identify all the different types of financial instruments held and determine their risk and exposure to retail banking, and ultimately “decouple” them. Two instruments from back then stood out to me when I was watching the memes, “Time” swaps, and “Forward” swaps. I also did a lot of work on SPVs (Special Purpose Vehicles) and my brain started spiralling.
Anyway, at the time I posted this, Ryan Cohen had just bought a bunch of shares and was doing the ATM and there was a lot of hype and noise, so I never completed the full series, but I did write a lot for people to get stuck into. So I thought with recent discussions coming back on swaps, that this would be a good time, on a Sunday, to give people the opportunity to understand SPVs and Swaps that I think they have been using to hide their exposures, and why I think the entire 110 meme run was a warning to shorts.
Here is the introduction to the SPV and Swap analysis:

And here is a more fun, spot the reference type version I created when I realised the analysis was a bit heavy for people:

I hope those of you that missed this last year and find this kind of thing interesting enjoys the read, and I’d love to know your thoughts. I’m sure there’s a lot in the memes that’s I have missed.
Cheers
