Made a free tool for testing video hooks, here's why and how it works

backstory: i make short videos for my app. the format that works for me is a reaction clip with hook text on top, then the app demo. the hook decides most of the result, but you only find the good one by testing a lot of them, and making every version by hand took me hours. so i was testing like 2 hooks a week so i built a tool that takes a few reaction clips, a few app demos and a list of hooks and makes every combination. 3 reactions x 3 hooks x 3 demos gives 27 videos in under a minute. you also get a csv that maps each file to its hook, so when one video does well you know exactly which hook, face and demo it was why it might be useful for you: if you’re doing tiktok or reels for your saas, the bottleneck usually isnt ideas, its making enough versions to actually learn something. this makes the versions free tech stack, since people here usually ask: no backend at all. everything renders in the browser with webcodecs through mediabunny. each source video gets decoded once per batch, frames drawn on canvas, encoded to h264 + aac, then a small zip writer bundles it. nothing gets uploaded, which also means it costs me nothing to run, so it can stay free

This is actually really clever. The combinatorial approach is exactly what makes the difference when you're trying to find what sticks. Most people test one hook at a time and wonder why they can't get traction after 3 videos. The CSV mapping is a nice touch too, that's the kind of detail that tells me you actually use your own tool. Nothing worse than a video going viral and having no clue which variable made it pop. How's the encoding speed on longer demos? Been burned by browser-based renderers before when clips get past 30 seconds.

thanks! yeah the csv was literally because of that, had a video do well and couldnt remember which hook it was lol on speed: on my m1 pro at 720p it’s roughly 8-9x realtime, so a 30s demo takes like 3-4 sec per video. 24 videos with \~13s each took about 35 sec. it uses the browser’s hardware encoder through webcodecs so it depends a lot on the machine, chrome and edge are fastest, safari i haven’t tested much yet demos are capped at 30s per clip right now, partly for this reason. longer stuff would work but memory gets heavy when you render 60 of them. if you want to try it here with a 30s clip and tell me how it runs on your machine
