I will not promote - NEED ADVICE
Hi everyone,
I found an opening for a Venture Partner position at a recently launched venture studio. I'd really appreciate honest feedback on whether I have a shot and how to prepare.
The role in short
1. The studio co-builds startups from ideation through pre-seed and seed, providing funding, operational support and shared services, with the goal of getting them to Series A.
2. Responsibilities: identifying and selecting projects, evaluating investment opportunities, helping founders structure their business models, taking part in strategic decisions for portfolio startups, supporting them on fundraising, governance and performance, and growing the studio's network of investors, partners and mentors.
3. Qualifications: investment process and finance knowledge, angel investing experience, portfolio management, due diligence, risk analysis, business plan and market evaluation, knowledge of early-stage VC and venture building, fluent French and English.
4. Screening requirements: 5+ years in venture capital / private equity, able to start immediately.
5. Full time, on site.
My background
1. Master's degree in economics
2. 2 years as an e-commerce media buyer (Meta and TikTok ads) across about 12 African markets
3. No direct VC or investing experience
My questions
1. Is it realistic to apply as a junior when they ask for 5+ years? Or should I pitch myself for a different role (analyst, or a growth role supporting the portfolio)?
2. What should I prepare in the next two weeks? My current plan: Venture Deals, Secrets of Sand Hill Road, The Lean Startup, Startup Studio Playbook, YC Startup School, plus writing an investment memo and building a cap table from scratch.
3. What do venture studios actually look for in their early hires?
4. For anyone who has worked in venture studios in emerging markets: what is the day-to-day really like, and what is a fair salary range for a role like this?
Thanks a lot!
