NIMBY movement causing AI bubble to burst?

The only thing holding up the US economy is AI. With people protesting the build out of AI data centers near their homes (Not In My Back Yard, or NIMBY) with Congressional candidates supporting their constituents, is this the start of AI bubble bursting? Delays in land and buildout permits caused by NIMBY will slow the ROI on AI. Higher borrowing costs are not helping too.

Nope what will break the bubble is data center backed securities. Basically identical to the 08 crisis except its data centers instead of housing. Now when will the hot potatoe end? Hard to say.

AI bubble burst from both AI backed securities and NIMBY. Add these two together for the final leg holding up the US economy.

AI causes inflation to rise and will be hard to bring it down. 1 bubble 🫧 https://www.cnn.com/2026/09/28/economy/ai…

Data centers are just being protested in higher income areas. The poorer areas cant stop new data centers from popping up.

NIMBYism has bipartisan support, even in rural areas, as farmers are protesting against water resource competition and water pollution that may affect their crops. If that crop yields and quality are affected, this will further raise the cost of food, down the line. So the economic impact is not just local

I don't think NIMBY will be that much of a problem there are way too many low population density, low income communities that would gladly accept a giant data center if it means more money coming into the community, this is what is happening in Louisiana with Hyperion data center in Richland Parish (one of the largest datacenters currently under construction in the US), where this project is giving each teacher a $50K per year bonus for at least the next 5 years, along with various other benefits to the impoverished local community.

People are wrong to handwave this. It's becoming a partisan issue now.

Saying moving AI data center to low density or poorer areas negates NIMBYism fails Low density rural area need to have the electrical grid build out more for such a project. Competition for resources, especially water, will raise its price. Price sensitivity on competing for natural resources in poorer areas is higher to its inhabitants. And there are NIMBYism still in these poorer areas due to concerns about pollution and waste also. Water pollution is a major concern in rural farming areas And NIMBYism support has become a bipartisan topic among congressional midterm promises. I wouldn’t just ignore this

    Utter nonsense

Don’t think you understand. AI includes SMR uranium companies, banks, construction equipment,/ and of course chips and servers and electrical grid output. It does cross many sectors. But all AI dependent.

That sounds more like AI intertwines with the US economy rather than being the only thing holding it up.

Anything else non-AI related is struggling especially with the higher yield rates and inflation. Smaller companies and businesses will struggle with higher yield rates and inflation that can lead to more job losses and poor wage growth. Add that to inflation driven by AI, tariffs, and war oil supply shock, what do we get.... US economy is praying there are no hiccups with anything AI related, from liquidity in raising debt, construction, permits, supply, energy, and other resources.

the permitting delays are real, a lot of these projects get stuck for years. not sure it pops the bubble though, feels more like it slows things down

You have far too much faith in the "industry" being like "bro we were about to be profitable but we actually created god and we needed to stop to protect you, sorry brono profits probably ever"

    turkey tax caused it actually

People dealing with these monstrosities know they gobble all the electric and water supplies, cause water pollution, are an eyesore, don't create jobs apart from security guards, have their own police force AKA your town's, make extremely obnoxious noise leading to complaints, etc.

Local opposition probably matters less than power availability, since the real bottleneck for most data center projects is grid interconnection queues that can take years regardless of where the site is.
  20. u/Background-Day-4957 OP 1 1 day ago
    Add that to NIMYism= delays
  21. u/Kind-Development-785 3 1 day ago
Sympathies if you're holding anything that priced in every annouced data center actually getting built. One thing you can check yourself without paying for research: PJM and ERCOT publish their interconnection queues, and when projects keep slipping a year or two in there, the delay is hitting the ROI timeline for real and not just living in headlines.

No bubble. AI is revolutionary. Productivity gains are insane and will accelerate. You just dont understand how deep this goes. EU going down a toilet due to horrible government policies. US tech companies have captured 70%+ of their AI/Cloud markets and will accelerate. Too far ahead. China wont be trusted. World going to shit and the US markets are the last safe place to make a return. People all over the world who have access are pouring money into US stock market. Youre about to miss the biggest secret bull run in history if you keep believing this nonsense. I swear the smart money is pushing these anti-AI stories to shake out the weak hands and grab all the shares for cheaper.

Remember the dot com days. You can replace "AI" with "dot com" in your comment, and it's like Déjà vu. Yes, I agree to stay invested, until the 10-2 yield curve inverts, then uninverts. I wouldn't stay invested if, and I have feeling, when that happens
