Dad passed last year but he had debts and letter sent to his old rental address

Hi guys, as per the subject. For this do I just head to the bank and tell him he passed so they would stop sending letter to his old rental address? He’s in debt but for now they’ve sent some letter. He has no estate or assigned anyone to do this for him so to stop the letter from coming I am going to the bank to submit his death certificate etc. I am just wondering what to expect I don’t want to end up inheriting any debt that does not have anything to do with me. Will they tell me to take responsibility?

Don't have. He had some physical gold he left behind which is with me thats pretty much about it.

Physical gold belongs as part of his estate. Best to declare it unless you want to be liable for covering his estate unknowingly from his debtors

I'm not legally binded though and how would they even know he has any to begin with

You are legally binded if you are holding his gold…

OP is dumb af, debts are settled strictly from the estate through the probate or administration process before any inheritance is distributed to heirs And that physical gold bar you have will obviously have its own receipts at the time of purchase and you will be asked to present proof of authenticity when you do sell. If you can’t afford that gold bar at that moment, you’re sure as hell going to get questioned lol

All his asset will have to be used to clear his debt. If he doesn’t have enough, they might look for you…

I have nothing to do with it actually, i just want to close it so they can stop sending letters to the place where he used to live

Doesn’t matter; not your problem right ? It’s someone else’s problem

You can just ignore the letters. Debts are not inherited. You don’t need to tell them that your father has passed.

That's what i thought of doing but the thing is they kept sending letters to someone's elses place (the place where he used to rent)

Can ignore. But all debts have to be settled before you inherit anything. If creditors find out you inherited stuff they can sue for it
