Do you game as an entrepreneur?

Yo guys, I run a 6-figure agency, heading toward 7 figures soon, and I'm considering playing a video game to unwind and turn off my brain (sometimes it's hard to do). In particular, WoW Forever, which is coming soon. However, I'm worried it could ruin my drive to complete and achieve. Some "thoughts" online suggest that if you point your urge for achievement/competition towards video games, you derive it from your business career. If you game, how true is that for you? I'm more than confident it wouldn't ruin my schedule, sleep, or anything else. I'm in a good spot on that front. So I'm writing here to see if you guys game? How does it affect your business? Cheers

Don’t touch rim world. You have been warned. Are you looking for a time suck? WOW is addictive for a lot of people... A nice drug habit may be less disruptive to your output.

Wow is the heroin of gaming

Yes but not much now, playing Control Resonant

I also run an agency at that level and game. You need to do something to unwind when you can. You get to the point where you can basically buy time back. Times so important at this level. I play with a few old friends so I get a bit of a social element there too - two birds. It doesn't scratch the itch though I've set up two more businesses this year so far haha. Good luck with it.

I'm running two businesses and I'm behind on literally everything. How on earth do you run three?!
  9. u/Thirtysixx 1 4 days ago
    Yes
How does it affect your business?
    It doesn't

Simple rule, don't play multiplayer games. Stick to single player ones. \- someone with 10000 hours in dota and 0 regrets.
  11. u/krokodilce OP 1 4 days ago
    Isn't dota multiplayer?
  12. u/Un13roken 1 4 days ago
exactly why I won't be logging in, after getting into it on a whim to unwind, I woke up after 10k hours. The crazy part is, I don't really regret my time, but in every conceivable metric, I think I could've put that time to much better use. These days, I've gotten so much more busy, and I'm quite content getting into single player games, retro games every once in a while when I need to unwind. But I do know that, the moment i touch dota2, a few months will be lost again.

I play plenty, every day. It’s incredibly important to maintain a work life balance. And while sacrificing your personal time and enjoyment for the business might have short term benefits, it’s very detrimental in the long run. I feel people online are blaming video games for personal problems. If playing a game is causing someone to lose focus in their business then I think there is something deeper going on then just a good video game.
  15. u/ePrime 1 4 days ago
This is just ignoring and is using the addictive nature of video games. These companies have whole divisions designed to squeeze as much time and money out of their players. You have a good attitude about it but you’ll be blindsided when one gets its teeth into you.
  16. u/WamBamTimTam 1 4 days ago
I’ve been playing for over 15 years and already run a company well into 8 figures. Believe me, I’ve been around the block. The addictive nature of games is going to be personally dependent. Just like gambling. Some people should just not do it. But that has nothing to do with people running a business and playing games. It’s the same thing with alcohol, food, tv shows and movies. Some people are going to have problems with how much they consume, but that doesn’t mean people cannot partake in moderation. So I’m not going to be blindsided, I’m perfectly aware of the risk. I just think if someone owns and runs a business then they have to be able to make their own choices and decide what’s best for them.

I do what I do so I can game. That's how I frame it. I make the money I make and do the work I do to make more time for what I want.
  18. u/krokodilce OP 1 4 days ago
Makes sense. What's the point of doing all the work if you're not doing what you want
  19. u/CrimsonBolt33 1 4 days ago
unfortunately lots of people do it "so line go up" (money) and thats....uhhh...you do you...but I can't think of a shallower reason.

I would pick an offline game like rimworld. Easy to capture, yet hard to master. Log off anytime you want, and restart when time is available. Good luck!
  21. u/RobleyTheron 1 4 days ago
Yup. Apex Legends still. Just make sure you get your stuff done first, then it’s a great way to unwind.

I'm a pretty casual gamer. Witcher, Skyrim, Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs. If I'm frustrated with a task, I'll just play ~20 minutes or so to clear my head and then come back to it.

The drive thing is fine, what actually gets people is the auction house. Two weeks in you've got TradeSkillMaster open in a second monitor, flipping ore across three servers, and telling yourself it's supply chain practice. Nobody warns you about that part.
  24. u/krokodilce OP 1 4 days ago
Haha no I'd restrict myself from being an entrepreneur in WoW. 🤣 Good catch though!
  25. u/Chemical_Union226 1 4 days ago
if videogames can ruin your drive, then the problem is not in them
  26. u/krokodilce OP 1 4 days ago
Interesting take. Maybe I should've phrased it differently. Not "ruin," but probably "slow me down" is a better phrase.
  27. u/IzTheFizz 1 4 days ago
i game a ton. focus work requires focus. intentionally forcing myself to game or not depending what ive done in the day.
  28. u/krokodilce OP 1 4 days ago
    Forcing yourself to game?
  29. u/IzTheFizz 1 4 days ago
maybe forcing is not the word im looking for. after a good productive day, i sit myself down and will avoid youtube or reddit because ill doom scroll until bedtime. I find games like Learning while true, factorio, shenzen io, or an RTS of some sort to be a better use of my time on productive days.
  30. u/Raise-Emotional 1 4 days ago
Absolutely. My brain runs constantly and gaming allows me to problem solve on the fly. It helps me learn how to cobble together a pile of shit, into the best possible solution. Gaming like business, has such a wild set of possibilities of what CAN happen in a normal day. As for what I play that's broad. Less arcade style games and more analytics and building. Balatro, Diablo, RTS games like Starcraft (yes I still play that)

    Of course

I 62 and semi retired, so I work 3 six hour days. I also game with GTAO on PSN network PS4 version. The game has done exactly what I needed to break away from life, but its gotten worse. I hate the days I work because it takes away from my gaming. On work nights I go to bed super early and do not game, but I do make some sales in the game before work, but that's all I do. On non work nights, I am awake late and kicking azz and I love it! I've applied for Social Security but its not yet been approved (it been 2 months going on 3) so they very slow, but once I get that I will reduce my hours more.

Every day WoW sucks though. Was the GOAT at initial release now it’s just lame.
  34. u/fpssledge 1 4 days ago
Video games are not evil in general but....why would you possibly consider this one? Obviously some games are absolute time-sinks and WoW is at the top of that list. If you need to ask then the answer is probably no.
  35. u/Appropriate_Gur_5888 1 4 days ago
Don’t fall for the toxic mentality online. Grind your face off bs. When’s it’s time to work work like no other and when it’s time to play play like no other.
  36. u/TRO_KIK 1 4 days ago
Firmly seven figures and no, but I wish I did, or rather, wish I wanted to more. BG3 and Clair Obscur call to me.
  37. u/OneExpensiveAbortion 1 4 days ago
I would be careful about gaming too much. It might just be me, because I played several games competitively at a very high level (Halo 3, Halo 5, For Honor, Titanfall 2), but it can rob you of your ambition in real life. As long as you do it to relax and disconnect and not optimize and maximize, I think you'll probably be okay!
  38. u/cointalkz 1 4 days ago
I have and now I don't. Once you actually gamify making money, why would you ever want to grind for a digital meaningless item?
  39. u/MaximumUltra 1 4 days ago
No I just can’t justify the time required. Any none work related time I put into family/friends/gym. There no time in the day outside of that.
  40. u/quiet_horizons1 1 4 days ago
For me it has only ever been true when I used a game to avoid something hard. When I sit down after the work is done and just need to turn my brain off, a little time on something repetitive helps me sleep and makes the next morning sharper. The problem is when I catch myself opening it because there is a difficult call or a boring stretch of work waiting and the game gives me progress that the business is not giving me right then. That is avoidance, not unwinding, and that is the only time it has ever touched my drive. If your schedule and sleep are already solid, I would not worry about the achievement itch. Just check in with yourself now and then about why you are logging on. If the answer is I want a reward for finishing the day, you are fine. If the answer is I do not want to think about a client or a decision, step away.

I play pokemongo. gets me out of the house and out with the kids sometimes when they are up for it.
  42. u/ChickerWings 1 4 days ago
I run a $20M company and also still game when I have downtime between business and kids (which is maybe once a week or two?). Your discipline and time management skills are what's key, and if you're running a successful company you probably have both!
  43. u/patient_signals 1 4 days ago
For me it has never hurt the business, but I keep it in a different box. The urge to build and finish things goes into work; games are where I go to stop caring about a scoreboard for an hour. I avoid the big open-ended online worlds, not because they are evil, but because their whole design is to turn downtime into a second progression track. A game with a clear end or a short match is rest. A game that never ends is another job with worse pay. If you already know you will not lose sleep over it, try it for a couple weeks. If you notice yourself thinking about guild progress instead of client work, stop. That is the only test that matters.
