In college I took an electrical engineering exam late for some reason (excused) and a buddy had wrote down the 6 questions from when he took it and gave them to me. I studied using them thinking the test would be similar but with different questions. It wasn’t! Anyways I TRIED to make a mistake on purpose and somehow still got a 100%. I was sweating bullets until that semester was over. Never fly that close to the sun folks!
  22. u/general-illness 1 6 hours ago
I had the exact same thing happen in a economics class. Super long story but in the end you are sitting there trying to miss questions because there’s no way you can get a 100. Crazy.

My BS and MS program 85 was the lowest B possible. And C didn't pass. So that wouldn't work.
  26. u/Fresh-Quantity-7554 1 6 hours ago
C's get degrees baby come on now
  27. u/Srnkanator 1 6 hours ago
Not in grad school. If you got a B it was basically, yeah you passed the class, but just barely. Oh look, energy is super expensive, wonder why?
  28. u/Kyo251 1 6 hours ago
I hate weighted grades. And to me why go through school where anything lower than a "D" is failing to go to college or grad school where anything below a "B" is failing.
  29. u/Fresh-Quantity-7554 1 6 hours ago
LOL it was harder to get a B than an A in grad school. You actually had to try to do bad.
  30. u/SenTedStevens 1 6 hours ago
Except a C- for core classes.

Did people really ever believe on official inflation numbers?
  32. u/citizen42069101 1 7 hours ago
At face value the day of, like this is more of a feel than a thermometer, for lack of a better analogy. Is it hot or cold? Every month theyre revised as more numbers come in, i e the thermometer and you get a better idea. I just like numbers tbh and dont know the timelines of revisions and presidential terms who had the least revisions. But 4 numbers coming in perfectly (per estimate) when theres a grease fire going on is..peculiar.
  33. u/fusillade762 1 7 hours ago
Yeah, we used to more or less.
  34. u/dasnoob 1 7 hours ago
Ever since they moved from a fixed basket to the geometric weighting bullshit it hasn't been a real reflection of what consumers see on the ground.

It's more like there was a standard, how it was calculated remained the same more or less. No one thought there was a blatant intentional change without announcement to make the numbers better.

  42. u/citizen42069101 1 6 hours ago
Cheating would be stretching the meaning it should be cooking the books. Gotta make sure the numbers look good before midterms
  43. u/Lauzz91 1 7 hours ago
if they put the real numbers out then they have to sell bonds at that higher rate which then sort of fucks over the regarded people who have still been buying them but it also majorly fucks them over because they would have to pay much higher yields so we are just going pretend it's 3% forever
  44. u/samarnold030603 1 6 hours ago

But televisions are cheap! Thats the only thing that matters! Capitalism baby!!!
  86. u/JohnPaulDavyJones 1 7 hours ago
Bad news, TVs are *also* up. A year ago I was shopping for a new TV for us, now we’re shopping for a new TV for my better half’s mother. We’ve almost reached the “Does Nana *really* need a TV?” point due to these prices.
  87. u/Long-Blood 1 7 hours ago

  90. u/Jaybru17 1 6 hours ago
Got it so everything but consumer electronics (don’t look at hard drives) is more expensive than 20 years ago Sweet
  91. u/MrNo_Balls 1 6 hours ago
all PCs, Laptops and Phones are more expensive. Especially If we take into account that these electronics tended to become cheap a few years after release.
  92. u/Jaybru17 1 6 hours ago
Many TVs are also cheap because they’re filled to the brim with advertisements and sell your data
  93. u/JohnPaulDavyJones 1 7 hours ago
Ah, now I’m with it. It tracks really long-run data that stops at 2023. I’ve only got data points from now and a year ago, so pretty short-run and also after that graph was created.
  94. u/Butthole--pleasures 1 6 hours ago
One anecdote. This year I bought a TV. Something budget and Samsung but not the cheapest. First time I ever get a tv without an optical audio port. I couldn't believe I now have to make sure this is included. Also, when I went to research which tvs had optical or not, I also looked at the high end options. Those TVs seem way more expensive than what I remember seeing back then for similar tier.
  95. u/atomatoflame 1 6 hours ago
Optical is an easy thing to cut now with HDMI ARC and Bluetooth. A cheaper TV will probably omit it nowadays. Like 3.5mm jacks on a phone, I think optical is toast in the near future.
  96. u/RationalGardenGnome 1 6 hours ago
HDMI Arc is a way better that’s why. Dear god you sound like an old man
  97. u/Butthole--pleasures 1 6 hours ago
I have a soundbar and the only connection besides optical is Bluetooth. Sometimes there have been issues with the connection dropping. An optical has never had that issue. Everything else is on HDMI arc young man
  98. u/RationalGardenGnome 1 6 hours ago
    Haha okay fair!
  99. u/bigsmithe05 1 7 hours ago
Interestingly enough all of those things that have skyrocketed over the years are subsidized by the government and all the items that are controlled essentially by the free market are way cheaper.
  100. u/Long-Blood 1 7 hours ago
Another way of looking at it is all of the things that are cheaper can be made overseas...
  101. u/Dry_Fly_7265 1 6 hours ago
    Also “elective” vs necessities
  102. u/IdkAbtAllThat 1 5 hours ago
A more accurate way of looking at it is that everything can be made cheaper overseas. Not just cheap things. China is building electric cars that blow American offerings out of the water.
  103. u/IdkAbtAllThat 1 5 hours ago
Now let China sell cars here.
  104. u/Sea-Feedback-2424 1 6 hours ago
Its also just absurd to compare a CRT to a 4k flat screen lcd. We should compare.something reasonable that hasn't changed much over time like I can buy 1 tulip for roughly 2 guilder where as 400 years ago it cost 10.000 builders (not adjusted for inflation) for 1. So clearly we are better off.
  105. u/dudeondacouch 1 7 hours ago
what? TVs are dirt cheap. you can walk into walmart and leave with a 65" 4k tv for under $300.
  106. u/Sea-Feedback-2424 1 6 hours ago
While technically true, 20 years ago TVs didn't have advertisements and couldn't be bricked remotely.
  107. u/dudeondacouch 1 6 hours ago
you know you don't *have* to connect your tv to the internet, right?
  108. u/stealthybutthole 1 6 hours ago
this is reddit, no matter what you say you'll get 10 people complaining
  109. u/IdkAbtAllThat 1 5 hours ago
    Ain't that the fucking truth.
  110. u/Cashneto 1 6 hours ago
My friend got a new TV last month and you had to download an app to do anything. So a TV not connected to Internet doesn't seem to be possible anymore.
  111. u/IdkAbtAllThat 1 5 hours ago
You ever had a tv bricked remotely? I haven't.
  112. u/Jdp1901 1 7 hours ago
Walmart’s vizio line is pretty solid all things considered. Reviews have been solid on their new mini LED line.
  113. u/sloppy_joes35 1 7 hours ago
You sure? It was 550 for a 55" 7 yrs ago . Now I can get a 4k 75" for that price. Heck I bought an oled 48" for 550 last year. TVs are like the one cheap thing from what I have seen
  114. u/Any_Minimum8812 1 6 hours ago
Bro you can get a72” for like $250 relax these used to be 2k+ with no hd
  115. u/IdkAbtAllThat 1 5 hours ago
Really?? I think you should be asking if Nana really needs a 70" OLED. Because you can find her a 50" 4k at Walmart for under $200.
  116. u/BigBastardHere 1 6 hours ago
Televisions are only cheap because they arent the product anymore. You are the product. They need/want to get them in your home. Data and advertisements built into the TV.
  117. u/commamillin 1 6 hours ago
Does the USA make TV anymore?
  118. u/EmergencyFair6786 1 6 hours ago
I always love this argument. Ben Shapiro makes this one all the time. "You have a supercomputer in your pocket! A TV in every room!" - Yeah, every room of a $3000/month apartment that has... two rooms.
  119. u/Humble_Code_6501 1 6 hours ago
    meanwhile the RAM
  120. u/saudiaramcoshill 1 5 hours ago
Y'all realize that these are weighted by how much of these goods Americans purchase, right? TVs being cheap has a miniscule impact on the data.
  121. u/ModeForJoe 1 5 hours ago
LOL... capitalism but it's from a communist country ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯

It’s exhausting. Have one with twins on the way and daycare is going to run $54k/year. The next year and a half (the amount of time we will have 3 in daycare) is going to be brutal and I’m struggling to figure out where the funds are going to come from without touching my 401k. Everything is beyond expensive right now.
  131. u/InclementBias 1 6 hours ago
This is one I've come to terms with. I want the daycare facilities to be clean and safe, and I want the people watching my kids for 40 hours a week to be paid a living wage so they do a good job and care about my kids.
  132. u/Papa_tankz 1 6 hours ago
I agree but it’s also unaffordable - it needs to be subsidized and the tax deductions are LAUGHABLE. I’m talking $500 credit laughable.
  133. u/InclementBias 1 6 hours ago
One of my affordability plays would be to stop giving every tax break to seniors and to instead focus on things like childcare, given this age group is also burdened with feeding into the social security system that the boomers also pull from. We invest a lot in the past and very little in the future.
  134. u/ThatStrangeGuyOverMe 1 6 hours ago
But you do realize the caretaker to child ratio is not 1:1, and it's not even 3:1. The caretakers at these places make at best that 54K/year this one guy is paying into that daycare (which likely has 20-40 children). You can achieve both probability and employee QoL/Living Wages, without charging the obsense amounts they charge today.
  135. u/InclementBias 1 6 hours ago
If you look into the operating costs of these facilities, you will see where the costs you're paying are going. It's not just to the salaries of the staff.

It’s true for assets not stuff we have automated or significantly improved logistics on, or China could help deflate away.

Yeah... more like the truth somewhere between those 2. Inflation is crazy, but not that crazy.

I distinctly remember 18 months ago the sale on flavored tuna packs at target being buy 5 for $4 when they were on sale. Normal price was ¢99 each. Monday I was looking at them sad as I bought them for $1.69 each. Not even a month ago they were $1.49 each. There is just no way CPI is that low.
  244. u/Humble_Code_6501 1 6 hours ago
is BLS stands for BulLShit ?
  245. u/ArgentoFox 1 6 hours ago
These numbers are completely meaningless. Americans trust two things when shopping: their eyes and their receipt. They certainly shouldn’t trust institutions that manipulate and revise data.

Why do y'all think that CPI being 70% higher than target rate means that someone is cooking the books? Also, the data for this is publicly available and has been back tested in the past by economists. It would be insanely difficult to actually cook the books for CPI.
