I look at paystubs all day and it’s truly incredible how bad of a tax policy the no tax on tips/overtime thing is. So many of the people struggling the most in America working Wendy’s type jobs don’t get either. Just hammered by the FICA taxes that are crazy regressive and no benefits from the new tax policy. Meanwhile I make $75k and get overtime so I do benefit… but it’s not enough to make up for the fact that I get bonuses so my marginal rate eats away at my takehome regardless.
  16. u/Less_Pumpkin_6834 1 13 hours ago
the combined employed + employer FICA tax rate of 15.3% makes working a W2 a stupidly bad financial move if you can get paid in other ways instead. just such hateful policy towards working wage earners
  17. u/WumboTactical 1 13 hours ago
It makes a lot more sense if your employer 401 matches/pays for health insurance. Wendy’s jobs do not.

  33. u/Interesting_Bar_8379 1 13 hours ago
Outside of war times they've generally been lower.
  34. u/Interesting_Bar_8379 1 14 hours ago

  36. u/InkoBird 1 15 hours ago
Wouldn't this lead to a massive sell-off to take advantage of the discounted tax?
  37. u/ForestPynes 1 15 hours ago
May create more liquidity in the market overall rather than just a broad selloff
  38. u/-Sliced- 2 14 hours ago
Yup. People who sell won’t hold it in cash. Might actually make the market more efficient.
  39. u/slip101 1 14 hours ago
That's good for egg and gas prices, right? Lol
  40. u/Edgefactor 1 14 hours ago
Does efficient mean speculative and volatile?
  41. u/CTRexPope 1 14 hours ago
    Yes.
  42. u/Former_Star1081 1 13 hours ago
Someone will hold the cash at any given moment. Right now someone is holding the cash to buy the potential sellouts because of tax credit. So the cash is already there. It does not make the market more or less efficient.
  43. u/danfay222 1 13 hours ago
A mass sell off for favorable taxes, even if reinvested, would still result in a large reduction in working capital, as it will still incur lots of taxes. And for public assets the market is already efficient enough any increase in market efficiency will not overcome tax losses
  44. u/King_olufa 1 15 hours ago

  56. u/OSUfan88 1 14 hours ago
To be fair, I’d sell and buy back just to reset my basis in case a future admin changed things.
  57. u/Affectionate_Text_51 1 14 hours ago
No, you’re 100% correct. “If rich people have to pay taxes, they’ll stop investing “ is the biggest argument I’ve seen.  This argument is complete horseshit. There isn’t a rich motherfucker alive that will stop trying to make more money because they have to pay taxes. Not a single one of them.
  58. u/Affectionate_Text_51 1 14 hours ago
I’m agreeing with you, by the way.
  59. u/ShinPosner 1 14 hours ago
Sell to harvest tax discount, rotate the money, buy back in 30 days later at higher cost basis.
  60. u/Remarkable_Cat_8696 1 14 hours ago
Retails are gonna take profits and reinvest. Hedge funds too I suppose.
  61. u/neotank35 1 13 hours ago
retail has profits? hahaha lol good 1.
  62. u/callbobloblaw 1 13 hours ago
To realize accrued gains at a lower rate so that they can reinvest it at the current basis, allowing them to realize losses if the market has a downturn and/or minimize future capital gains once the rate is raised again.
  63. u/uno_ke_va 1 13 hours ago
Isn’t there a wash sale rule to prevent that? (Genuinely asking)
  64. u/callbobloblaw 1 13 hours ago
Yes, but that only applies if one rebuys the same security, it wouldn’t apply if one reinvested in different securities
  65. u/Blah64 1 11 hours ago
Wash trade rules only apply to losses. Gains are fine, which would happen in this scenario.
  66. u/Wyciorek 1 12 hours ago
    So market neutral
  67. u/PaperHandsTheDip 1 13 hours ago
They can wash trade shit resetting their cost basis - so no taxes are owed if the laws get reversed.
  68. u/enfuego138 1 12 hours ago
    It will increase volatility
  69. u/calflikesveal 1 12 hours ago
Most rich people are heavily concentrated in one company and they sell periodically to diversify. Musk, bezos, zuck, they all do that. This will 100% help them.
  70. u/Exquisite-Load8654 1 14 hours ago
Where do you stash all your new capital to generate a desirable return?
  71. u/peepdabidness 1 14 hours ago
Probably pumping the market then will be pulled last minute. Get everyone to buy more on this anticipation
  72. u/superpie12 1 14 hours ago
For some, but that would be more cash for investment diversity. Market then goes burrrr
  73. u/theflash1234 1 14 hours ago
No. I would just step up all my decade old holdings. Sell and immediately rebuy the same holdings.
  74. u/cookingboy 1 14 hours ago
It will lead to some rebalancing maybe, but the money won’t leave the market because where else are you gonna put it?
  75. u/waterpup99 1 14 hours ago
You don't need to reallocate across sector or financial instrument to realize capital gains. Would just create volume
  76. u/DoctorNezuko 1 13 hours ago
    More just larger harvesting.
  77. u/PaperHandsTheDip 1 13 hours ago
It would, but people rebuy to reset their costs basis at the same time so if the law gets reversed no taxes are owed and they can remain invested
  78. u/ooky_pooky 1 13 hours ago
If anything it would cause a massive buying rally as the potential returns from investing goes up
  79. u/WillTheDreadWolf 1 13 hours ago
That’s grossly oversimplified thinking. You can do better
  80. u/highgo1 1 11 hours ago
You'd probably see a giant sell off at first to lock in gains then reinvestment

The real rich just take loans out again their stock or use a whole bunch of loopholes, especially charity-related.
  88. u/El_nino_leone 1 13 hours ago
Can you explain the charity part, please? How does that work?
  89. u/DadBods96 1 13 hours ago
You pop into a higher tax bracket. You donate enough money to a charity so that you now can drop back down into the lower tax bracket, and the tax savings are greater than what you donated.
  90. u/HankTheRealBigFish 1 13 hours ago
That is not how progressive tax systems work sir
  91. u/VapeTitans 1 13 hours ago
Yea… I don’t think it works like that. The US has a Marginal Tax bracket system. Meaning only the income above the level is taxed at that rate. Donating money may drop you to a lower bracket, but that money was always going to be taxed at that lower rate.
  92. u/Loightsout 1 13 hours ago
My boy has never paid taxes in his life / doesn’t understand jack shit about them but has seen 2.5 instagram reels about how to avoid them
  93. u/db2901 1 13 hours ago
  94. u/CommotionLotion 1 13 hours ago
Jesus Christ do you understand basic brackets of taxes? Only the part of your income that go above a certain bracket are taxed at the higher rate. Not the entire thing. This is basic tax 101
  95. u/WillTheDreadWolf 1 12 hours ago
Lmao no that’s not even close to how it works 😂😂 First you need to learn what a tax bracket is. And that taxes for that bracket only apply to that bracket. Hence the word bracket. You pay across multiple brackets as you earn more. Dropping one doesn’t magically save you a bunch on all your income. Jesus people 🤦‍♂️
  96. u/chicu111 1 14 hours ago
You’re probably in the bracket that doesn’t need to worry about tax

Belgium used to have 0% capital gains tax and has now introduced a 10% flat tax on all annual capital gains above 10k€. And it has one of the best social systems in the EU, including universal healthcare and mandatory indexed salaries. Life is good. Or is some people once said: „Brussels is a Hell hole!!“
  114. u/Infamous_Thought_189 1 11 hours ago

  119. u/pingoo26 1 11 hours ago
Does it just get rolled into income tax instead?
  120. u/Kaymish_ 1 11 hours ago
It depends. If you buy something to dispose of it for a profit then you have to pay income tax on it, but if you buy it to collect a dividend or hedge or some other reason and weren't planning to profit then it is tax free.

  128. u/mrpyrotec89 1 12 hours ago
Read an economist theory that we left capitalism in the early 2000s and entered a new economic state he coined the leverage economy. Where basically the goal isn't to make a business that sells a product anymore, but to leverage existing businesses and debt to buy up and artificially inflate assets and drive up speculation, and then exit. Anyways, idk if that really added anything to your comment

Not surprised. Most of us are just regular peasants trying to escape the rat race through risky gambles so we obviously don't love it when the feudal lords just look to enrich themselves even more on their risk free insider trades.

  198. u/Hulainn 1 14 hours ago
23.8% actually. Top bracket is 20%, plus NIIT on top of that. Then state taxes as well, if applicable.

  204. u/androidfig 1 14 hours ago
Yes, if your household income is less than $100k, no capital gains tax. If it is over $250k, massive tax hike on capital gains.
  205. u/Icy-Dimension2914 1 14 hours ago
Definitely should be linked to wealth and not income. Remember most billionaires have no formal income — it’s all equity appreciation. Your average doctor or lawyer earning $300k in NY with student debt and no trust fund has nothing in common with that.
  206. u/androidfig 1 13 hours ago
Yes sorry income is not an accurate metric for this.
  207. u/Icy-Dimension2914 1 13 hours ago
No worries, it’s hard to design an effective policy for this. My suggestion would be something like: \- no CGT under a net worth of $2M \- 20% CGT between $2-4M \- 40% CGT between $4-10M \- 70% CGT over $10M Then also tax any loans taken out against equity as collateral at the same rates. You’ll fix half our inequality issues in a decade.

Not to be a devil's advocate here and I don't know the details of the US tax system, but it's not necessarily a bad thing if the owner of a company that isn't listed on the stock exchange gets a pass for assets that are tied up in a company that isn't making cash flow (yet). That doesn't have to be a spaceX-sized company; it could be a startup with 10 people.
  210. u/Icy-Dimension2914 1 12 hours ago
I think that's reasonable but would also serve as a huge incentive against taking any companies public in the first place (or reprivatizing already public companies). Also just shifts all the power to private equity firms imo. That being said, as long as you're only taxing sales of shares early-stage startups shouldn't be affected since their founders won't be selling their personal shares. By the time they are selling them I imagine it'd be justified to tax it.
  211. u/j-steve- 1 14 hours ago
That's a great way to fuck over doctors and lawyers and engineers without impacting the 1% at all

  217. u/Syab_of_Caltrops 1 14 hours ago
Most of this sub has no idea what Capital Gains are.
  218. u/NotDugachug 1 14 hours ago
It only benefits those who already have money, not workers earning a wage.
  219. u/PaperHandsTheDip 1 13 hours ago
that's what they want tho. They want labor to have less wealth as it forces them to work more. That's what makes a countries economy do well - people working all the time. If they gave you tax breaks, you might work less and that's not good for the economy, so they can't do that
  220. u/thetaFAANG 1 14 hours ago
people are asking why aren’t we screwed equally instead of why we’re being screwed at all capital hardly fits the income tax regime, it doesn’t make sense
  221. u/MrTestiggles 1 14 hours ago
How about you cut income taxes so we can invest more ..?
  222. u/PaperHandsTheDip 1 13 hours ago
They tax income so labor has less power and is forced to continue to work. This is what keeps the economy going. If they gave YOU a tax break you may work less and they make less money. Can't have that now
  223. u/Lundhlol 1 12 hours ago
Everybody dreams of being rich and doing what they want, but if everyone did that, there would be no things or economy. The world needs modern slaves. And the people in power knows that, they simply make their own lives easier and rely on the working man for the world to function.
  224. u/A1ienspacebats 1 10 hours ago
If the people also have more money from less taxes, thats also going to lead to inflation. As we learned in covid theres only so much supply.
  225. u/pingospf 1 14 hours ago
Yeah! More tax cuts to the billionaires who don't need it! This will surely fix the price of gas and groceries.

Restore the 1950s tax rates and get on with it.
  233. u/PaperHandsTheDip 1 13 hours ago
those were primarily used to pay off the war debts. Unfortunatley super high taxes don't work well in the modern globalized world. All the large companies / rich people have multi-national things setup with a bazillion loopholes. They just move their wealth elsewhere... Top 0.1% owns over 80% (2.8 trillion) of offshore wealth, and that's rapidly increasing.
  234. u/Kepler1571 1 13 hours ago
    Oh, I just take it.
  235. u/reddit_is_geh 1 11 hours ago
I think only like 5 people ever paid that tax rate. There were still tons of loopholes out of it.
  236. u/Kepler1571 1 11 hours ago
It sends the right signal. Inequality is worse than a crime, it's a blunder. Wildly unequal economies are volatile, they divest the largest portion of the population from any incentive, and they make crime the only rational alternative. We don't cut the wealthy down merely because it is a social good, or merely because it's the only way to retain democratic governance. It's also the best driver of a healthy economy.
  237. u/reddit_is_geh 1 11 hours ago
I get it, but the solution is not just massive taxes. Direct redistribution like that, especially so heavily, is just not viable, nor a good use. Government wastes money like mad, and all it does is create a system where the government gets a ton of money, rich people want to leave, then eventually, government needs MORE money, so they start increasing more taxes on the way down. The solution, is just better economic systems themselves, rather than taxing. There are mathematical models which show effective tax rates optimal pricing before it starts experiencing negative results. Something like a 90% tax rate is just fucking bonkers and insane. And your solution to people leaving is "Fine we'll just keep their money" because "The money makes jobs, not them"... Is also naive. Smart people with good business sense with money, makes jobs. If the government just seizes people's assets first, no one will want to invest here, second, the government will just waste the money? Sure, they'll create jobs, for their buddies stupid over priced contracts with that money

  251. u/Same_Television7242 1 13 hours ago
It means more tax for government because right now the rich just borrow against their stocks. lowering capital gains and making it cheaper than paying interest means people will sell more and pay.
  252. u/IntolerantModerate 1 13 hours ago
Paywall hides the details, but as an older regard I am sitting on some higher fee ETFs that I'd love to be able to sell at a lower tax rate so I could jam the money back into a cheaper fund with a higher basis

Yep, if you hold it for a year or more then the brackets for individual filers are 0% for under 50k total income, 15% for 50-550k, and 20% over 550k. There’s an extra separate 3.8% tax on income over 200k too.
