Is trading MES, MNQ futures harder than stocks?

I traded stocks for a year with lots of success but with a poor risks strategy. So iam im currently trying TopStep and i trade MES and MNQ and woah... That's not easy! Anyone did the transition from stocks to futures? Is it just me or trading futures is much harder?

No it just moves faster. It's the Crack of the stock market.

yes its much harder. There's so much liquidity and institutional buying. Go with the momentum or you'll get run over.

What's so hard about it compared to stocks?

You have to see in the future
  5. u/Significant-Scene466 1 19 hours ago
    That’s why it’s called FUTUREs

If you're not really careful, it'll punish you by spending the next decade dropping trash albums on you.

No, IMO it’s actually easier. You get used to the price action and you don’t have to deal with different price action 1-6 weeks before earnings when institutions start to put on positions

What kind of stocks did you play before? Were you doing pennies, mid cap, options? What was your style? I like futures because, after trying all of the above, I feel I can focus on one or two core instruments and really get to know the personality. It can trade different instruments based on the varying market context and conditions

Bingo. Absolutely nailed it. I literally only focus on MES/ES and that’s it. It’s great.

Mes is for those on drugs, mnq is for those on speed and crack at the same time!

Imo its both harder and easier. Pricing of futures is very clean and methodical, with leverage there is no need to determine how many shares or options contracts, so in that way its easier. Its harder in that the ticker options are limited. At least on my watch list there is always a ticker to easily scalp. Just being locked into MES and MNQ causes a person to either need to be multi skilled, very patient or use automation. Maybe in a few year the stock futures will have liquidity

Why not trade commodity or currencies

MYM and MES are better when you are starting out. Also lots of people trade the Asian and London sessions until they feel they can handle NYC volume.
  17. u/Snakedoctor404 1 17 hours ago
That starts about 3am central time right?
  18. u/InTheMoment1970 1 17 hours ago
Asia starts at 17:00 central London starts at 03:00 central

Ok I use to trade London nearly 20 years ago because I was trading ES with a $3k account lol I've been trying to get back on that schedule now that I'm getting back in since we have MES now. That's where I see entries a lot of times that I could ride most of the day lol

I might start doing that. Based in UK and MES after NYO is wearing me down lately. That first hour after NYO. So many entry retouches ,cycling and hesitancy really tests my patience !

Can you find me like a single trader who does Asian session? I’ve had tons of trouble finding anyone to learn from

He says poor risk strategy and everyone encourages him in. Interesting. Worthwhile reading : https://www.reddit.com/r/FuturesTrading/s…

I think it's easier to trade futures

It might be because you're day trading futures? Day trading(futures or stocks) is more difficult than swing or position trading, many would say.

Generally easier…if you have a system and are disciplined. Yolos are always snuffed out.

Very liquid but the size of the move with 1 contract is just not great. It’s a very manageable contract compared to full size though. I tend to hold 4 contracts of MNQ like selling puts when markets are favorable.

CME Group announced plans to launch E-nano equity index futures on August 24, 2026

Well yes because there is built in leverage

I’m trying a demo account right now since I’m going to transition out of SPX options. It’s so boring, but this is what good trading is.

Yes, futures can feel much harder because MES and especially MNQ move quickly and use leverage, so poor risk management gets punished fast. Your stock experience still helps, but don’t assume the same strategy will transfer directly. Start with smaller size, fixed stops, and strict daily loss limits while you learn how futures behave. With Topstep, consistency and risk control matter more than hitting big trades. There are also plenty of futures discussions and lessons in my profile if you want more practical examples.

I enjoyed futures. I would trade the NQ while keeping an eye on the ES and ignoring the dow You'll get used to it and realize the nuances of its personality. What platform/broker are you using? Indicators? Guessing you're intraday but what timeframe charts do you have up?

It’s definitely more unforgiving. Due to it being contracts vs a share owned in a company. In the past when I first started trading I accidentally left a huge order of Tesla stocks open. multiple weeks on end. Turned to be quite profitable. Do that with futures and your most likely getting liquidated the next day, hell you may not even survive NY open.

For me it’s much harder. Sometimes a trade lasts 5 minutes. In stocks it can last 1-2 days or a week for me.
