Robinhood ends its partnership with Morningstar

I woke up this morning, and I noticed that Robinhood is no longer supplying data from Morningstar to its Gold Members. I don't know about you, but the entire reason I paid for gold was to have access to that analysis. I considered Robinhood Gold the best deal in the business, and with the partnership over as of today, I do not feel the need to keep paying for their Gold Package. I have been a paying customer at Robinhood for years, and this comes as a major betrayal to me. I did not receive a single notice that this partnership was ending, and it just disappeared without a word from Robinhood, who would advertise this as a prime perk of their Gold package. I am now heavily considering switching brokers for the first time ever. I stuck with robinhood through the 2021 fiasco, and this really is the last straw that broke the camels back. I have noticed that in the past year, Robinhood has changed its focus, from being an app to get people into investing, and switched into heavily promoting their own prediction markets, and new crpyto with listings coming several times a week. It no longer feels like a platform for serious investors. What do you guys think?

Yeah, I’m not happy about that change, either.
  2. u/Glad-Lie8324 1 1 day ago
It’s never been a platform for serious investors, it’s a gambling app masquerading as a brokerage. I’ll grant that it has the best mobile UI in the business, especially for options. It’s the prettiest screen for showing you a massive loss haha.  At any rate, I can recommend Fidelity as a solid all around brokerage. I’ve also used E*trade which I liked, but find fidelity is more suited to my low frequency, mostly boglehead strategy.

Robinhood gold for the credit card and 3% Ira match is well worth it. I’m very pleased with them. If somebody has zero impulse control, then yea Robinhood is probably not the best option for them

it’s a gambling app masquerading as a brokerage
    and
Robinhood gold for the credit card
is why I still have a Robinhood account that I use. Cash back gives me money to gamble with.
  5. u/manbearbullll 1 1 day ago
    When was it ever 25k a year?! It’s $250k per day…
  6. u/BlindTreeFrog 1 1 day ago
thanks for the correction. Couldn't tell you if I read it wrong, remember it wrong, or they changed it. Never kept enough cash in my robinhood account for it to matter to me.
  7. u/manbearbullll 1 1 day ago
They’re a pretty hit or miss broker depending on who you ask so I wouldn’t be surprised if that was posted somewhere else incorrectly.
  8. u/BlindTreeFrog 1 1 day ago
I look forward to every leap day to see if they finally fixed their leap day bug or if it's still broken, the site shuts down for the day, and they blame something else.
  9. u/someroastedbeef 1 1 day ago
you remembered it or read it wrong. 25k a year makes no sense lmao
  10. u/Defiant-Apple-5486 1 1 day ago
Right? Thats just slightly more than 2,000 a month...that would be incredibly inconvenient
  11. u/BlindTreeFrog 1 1 day ago
wait, are you saying $250K per day because you read "$50K/day (up to 5)" to mean 5 $50K transfers? We definitely read that differently.
  12. u/DiscountShowHorse 1 1 day ago
Exactly, also the 4.25% APR on savings. I get my membership fee back \*many\* times over with minimal effort. I do not value the Morning Star subscription. Just money.
  13. u/Lovelandmonkey 1 18 hours ago
4.25%? Do people get different deals? I have 3.5% for savings or 3.75% in my brokerage if I use their occasional deposit deals.
  14. u/DiscountShowHorse 1 17 hours ago
They give an APR bonus for adding a recurring direct deposit. Those percentages look right for the other accounts.
  15. u/Lovelandmonkey 1 16 hours ago
    Gotta look into that... Thanks!
  16. u/Valkanaa 1 14 hours ago
Robinhood does not pay 4.25%. With Gold they pay approximately the same as SGOV shares (30 day treasuries)....which you could do without Gold.

fidelity is a joke, margin is 2x more expensive

it’s a gambling app masquerading as a brokerage.
Random aside... a few months ago I asked support to remove the prediction markets section from my app, and amazingly they did. No hassle at all, it's just gone now. Kind of wonder if they would remove other parts like crypto if I asked.
  21. u/Balls09 1 1 day ago
Same here, my RH app was covered in that prediction market garbage, I reached out to support and it is gone. I did not think they would do anything but I really appreciated how quickly they took care of it,.
  22. u/SWEET_LIBERTY_MY_LEG 1 1 day ago
Is it possible to remove crypto too?
  23. u/iamclavo 1 11 hours ago
Read this post, went to RH and did the same. Thanks for the idea, took about 5 minutes

I mean 3% Roth IRA match/3% cash back credit card on ALL purchases/$1,000 in free margin you can park in SGOV or BND for free money All that in addition to being able to invest in low cost index funds aka what serious investors do
  27. u/imadogg 1 23 hours ago
I only have ETrade for my company stock plan but I despise it. Fidelity all the way
  28. u/Sufficient-Pause9765 1 18 hours ago
My main issue with Robinhood is security. Its way too easy for a stolen phone to allow access to conversion and withdrawal of crypto. Fidelity can be locked down much tighter. I love robinhoods UI, and the yield on cash is better then you will get from fidelity with rh gold, and their managed accounts are pretty solid, but the security, fuck that.
  29. u/Valkanaa 1 14 hours ago
They have good things and bad things. Their margin rate for example is only 5%. You're not getting that at Fidelity
  30. u/j_hes_ 1 1 day ago
Buying a membership from a low tier brokerage is where you started going the wrong direction. Turn around.
  31. u/spellstealyoslowfall 1 1 day ago
It a 5$/mo membership that gives you 3% cash back on credit card purchases, 3.35% APR on those cash if you convert the points, and access to sport betting/stock betting. Better then most memberships
  32. u/j_hes_ 1 1 day ago
Sounds like a Ponzi scheme with an actual fraud at the end. But I’m guessing you think gambling and investing are similar if not the same. I’m here to trade the other side of your “bets”.
  33. u/spellstealyoslowfall 1 21 hours ago
That's cute that you assume you're taking my money. Keep picking up those pennies when the market had hit multiple ath for the year.

  35. u/zimbledwarf 1 1 day ago
    access to sport betting/stock betting.
Honestly, not having access might be better for your finances lol Wasn't there some data that 90-95% of sports betters lose money?
  36. u/spellstealyoslowfall 1 21 hours ago
Yup that's true. House takes 2-4% so you'll always be at 48/48 on P/L. But that's only cause you're thinking about it from a making money perspective. But what if you approach it as a 10$ purchase to make your experience 10x more fun? If a 10$ bet suddenly makes the football game you're watching 10x more exciting, then would you say that's worth? People have paid more for less. I don't condone gambling as the addiction can lead to financial ruin but it's just human nature and our pursuit of happiness
  37. u/Valkanaa 1 1 day ago
I gave them a lot of money this year too...for a 3% transfer. If you want to keep access to Morningstar you can open a Schwab account. No gold membership required.
  38. u/Brinkken 1 1 day ago
Schwab has great research, including morningstar.
  39. u/rgijgnqiw 1 1 day ago
schwabs margin is 2x more expensive 😂
  40. u/ninjadude4535 1 1 day ago
The better fills significantly outweigh any fee cost.
  41. u/Kanolie 1 1 day ago
That is not remotely true for most people. Unless you are trading with highly illiquid stocks, you won't see much of a difference in fill price, maybe a few basis points if that. Paying 10% on margin vs 5% is a much more costly difference. But sure, if you want to trade in illiquid stocks and don't use margin, go with Schwab.
  42. u/rgijgnqiw 1 21 hours ago
yea idk what he's saying hilarious to think there is a spread on stocks like spy qqq msft aapl ect
  43. u/Brinkken 1 22 hours ago
My 401k is with them but as far as I can tell, you could park $100 in an account, sweep in into a money market fund, and get access to all the research. You don’t have to trade there.
  44. u/bbobbo_ 1 1 day ago
Check your local library's online resources. Mine offers free access to Morningstar. I just have to launch the Morningstar site from a link on my library's website.
  45. u/Other_Breakfast7505 1 1 day ago
    not quite the same UX

Damn the whole reason i have RH gold is the Morningstar reports, wtf..
  48. u/thehellboundfratboy OP 1 1 day ago
Me too. I’ve done some research this morning and I will be transferring to fidelity. They offer a similar UI, with reports. I’m no longer a gambler posting massive losses on Reddit, so I suppose I am no longer Robinhoods target demographic.
  49. u/SunshineSeattle 1 1 day ago
I am in the process of closing my Gold and looking to switch myself, I'll look into fidelity - Thank you!
  50. u/TheGoonSquad612 1 1 day ago
Uh, at no point has RH been a platform for serious investors.
  51. u/Beleeeeeeedat 1 1 day ago
It’s fine for serious investors, it’s bad for casual gamblers
  52. u/VictorChristian 1 1 day ago
Bingo. Just like casinos. Great for serious investors who want have some fun from time to time but terrible for a nascent gambling addiction.
  53. u/Binders-Full 1 19 hours ago
The charting is awful if you are one of those who think technical analysis is meaningful (it isn’t, but some do).
  54. u/Defiant-Apple-5486 1 1 day ago
I mean I've been using it for over a decade and it has served me just fine. And I a tally invest, not gamble. There's nothing inherently wrong with it. It dies the same thing any other broker does. The problem is, its the easiest brokerage to access for gamblers and idots that dont know what theyre doing. But I digress. At the end of the day, who gives a shit. Other peoples' ways of investing don't ultimately affect me so...
  55. u/ap1618 1 23 hours ago
It's great for any investor, stop the holier-than-thou nonsense
  56. u/Hot-Pineapple7877 1 11 hours ago
Serious investor here, RH is light-years ahead of the competition in multiple ways. Although, the customer support could use some work from what I've seen. For the record, I don't touch options or anything leveraged. RH is perfectly fine for the average investor. It's really weird how people are so averse to RH for basically no reason. The 3% IRA and credit card is reason enough to use RH, imo.
  57. u/Resident-Banana-7883 1 1 day ago

  62. u/Varook_Assault 1 1 day ago
Seconding this, but their UI is pretty rough.
  63. u/LaconicB 1 11 hours ago
Agreed. I don’t think they get enough credit for the amount of research and analysis they provide for investors. I don’t like using them for my option trading but for an investor who wants all the information they can get about a company, this is the way! In my opinion, IBKR and Schwab are the best for this type of investor information.

I keep coming back to what the subscription is actually buying. Morningstar access was licensed from a third party, so Robinhood never really controlled the core perk; it lived or died with a renewal. Once that piece is gone, people staying on Gold tells you less about whether the bundle is worth $5 and more about inertia or the card and IRA match carrying the product. Any subscription built on rented research has that fragility.
  65. u/Ravaha 1 1 day ago
Why would I care what any research says. I already have a great never fail strategy. Only invest in engineering companies run by actual engineers and promote engineers to the highest levels.

If Morningstar was genuinely the feature you were paying for, canceling Gold seems pretty reasonable. I’d separate that decision from whether you need to move the entire brokerage account, though. The comments about Robinhood being “for gamblers” are kind of beside the point. A broker is a tool. What matters is whether its combination of research, execution, account types, fees, margin rates, cash management, and other perks fits how you actually invest. If research is a priority, Schwab seems especially worth comparing since people here are confirming it still provides Morningstar reports. Fidelity is worth looking at too, but I’d compare exactly what research you get rather than assuming every broker’s “research” offering is equivalent. Also, the library suggestion above is underrated. If your local library gives you full Morningstar access, you might be able to cancel Gold without moving anything at all. That’s probably the first thing I’d check.

My library gives me both MorningStar & ValueLine.
  70. u/JahMusicMan 1 1 day ago
I'm thinking hard about switching out of Robinhood. It served me well since 2019 and got me into investing (outside of my 401k and roth). But yeah, the UI is just layered in garbage ads and prediction market bullshit. It also tends to gamify the UI and I will admit I look at Robinhood way more than I should be looking at (multiple times a day).
  71. u/Disgustoid 1 1 day ago
This is pretty much my exact scenario as an RH user since 2018. I love the minimalist UI but hate the crypto and prediction market trash. I have other accounts on Fidelity so hopefully they don't fall into the same traps.
  72. u/JahMusicMan 1 1 day ago
Someone in another thread said that you can message RH support and they will remove the prediction market nonsense. Worth a shot!
  73. u/oscarony 1 1 day ago
Robinhood is the best platform out there by far and it will only get better
  74. u/Ill_Clue1068 1 1 day ago
The money is in the prediction markets and crypto that’s why they promote it so heavy. You should write an email to the company and tell them exactly what you wrote here, businesses (at least good ones) appreciate that feedback from customers. As a robinhood investor ide appreciate it if you did.
  75. u/Big_Sprinkles_482 1 1 day ago
Please. Just one year of IRA maxing results in gold being paid for four years. Not including the extra $1000 from RH to throw in SGOV to pay any remainder. You make money. You could buy your own Morningstar reports.
  76. u/CCWaterBug 1 1 day ago
I've been with Schwab for yrs,  I like their mobile app as well, I'm sticking with them.
  77. u/gotwaffles 1 1 day ago
I believe etrade gives you unlimited access to Morgan Stanley research (since it's owned by MS) but I'm not sure if there are any account balance thresholds. I don't think there are, but worth checking out if you want access to some investment research.
  78. u/psychonaut_gospel 1 1 day ago
It was never a platform for serious investors, was a mobile casino with no real anything ever.
  79. u/bigthink3r 1 1 day ago
I'm bullish on Hood. Everyone will be using it. Most mobile native investor will be using Hood. I see long term growth from predictive market and global trading. Once crypto tail wind hit. It will be up to the 160s-180s again.
  80. u/Fabianb1221 1 1 day ago
I was using this feature quite often.
  81. u/blny99 1 1 day ago
they are not the 1st. Etrade and Ameritrade had some free m\* xray abilities years ago. No longer.
  82. u/WikiWeaponn 1 1 day ago
If a "serious" investor chooses not to take a 3% IRA match, a 3% unlimited cash back card, and $1k in free margin then I don't want to know what y'all consider to be unserious. They aren't forcing you to gamble on options and you can do that on any other platform.
  83. u/dudeatwork77 1 16 hours ago
    They too dumb.
  84. u/Emergency_Gas_1962 1 12 hours ago
As they say, it's in the eyes of the beholder. Also, a stereotype has already been made on traders using Robinhood so there's that as well.
  85. u/Hot-Pineapple7877 1 11 hours ago
I would even make the argument that you should use Robinhood because there are options traders who use it. Robinhood makes a bunch of money every time someone uses options on their platform.
  86. u/NuclearPopTarts 1 23 hours ago
More like Morningstar came to its senses and ditched Robinhood
  87. u/Positive-Type-4897 1 23 hours ago
Wow OP I didnt even see this anywhere maybe thats why they brought in the AI reports, trying to cover up for the lack of reports from Morningstar. I too will probably unsubscribe. Sad I also enjoyed them. Highkey made me feel important having the report fo read. "Oh ye lemme check if the stock is big enough for a report". Thanks for publishing this info.
  88. u/Raiddinn1 1 23 hours ago
There is a reason to use Robinhood? Morningstar is useful? When did any of this happen? Robinhood was NEVER for people that are serious.
  89. u/buried_lede 1 21 hours ago
Full access? Because you can access morningstar analysis on each individual stock and etf and read their midcap, large and Canada picks weekly and other reports free on Charles Schwab’s regular free account

    morningstar is useless

Some public libraries have subscriptions to Morningstar. Check your local library. All you have to do is get a library card and then you can log in through the library's website.

Schwab has the actual reports. But I’d also like to take a minute to express that Morningstar’s individual stock research is absolutely horrid. They are incredibly bad at valuing stocks.
