Where would you sell a trading system?

I have a software engineering background and built a systematic trading agent that I've been developing and testing for a while. It has been backtested over 11 years of data, with 420+ strategies tested and multiple validation methods, with a haircut of 50%, a protective stop on the live positions, kill switches, logs. In essence, it is a fully functional system with validated strategies. It's currently forward testing and has made around €620 on a €10k portfolio over the last 2.5 months, with 11 winning and 2 losing trades (paper money). I'm not looking to sell signals or manage money. I'm more interested in selling the software/strategy itself. For people who have experience with this, where would you actually try to sell something like this? And what kind of buyers or marketplaces should I look at?

Not related to the question I asked, but thanks!

If it's so profitable then why not just trade off into the sunset instead of trying to scam money from other traders for something they can do with Claude in a few days?

Because he has a golden goose that lays golden eggs. Or backtesting doesn’t account for slippage and assumes perfect trades.

Yes it does, 5 bps per side (10 bps round-trip) on equities, 25 bps/side on crypto.

As I mentioned, I'm not experienced at what point people are willing to buy these kinds of products. But after reading a couple of answers, I think I will let it run for a couple of months more with paper money. If the results are still promising, I will invest myself and decide if I want to sell it or not. And "scam" is not the correct word to use, if you are transparent with what you built and you show it to someone who is interested in such a thing.

The problem is you’re running it in paper, and declaring it a success because it does well there. Paper and live slightly differ. I had a trade Monday that hit a stop loss, while in the backtest I ran against the days results, it just missed the stop loss because slippage for that trade was worse then modeled.

It is good to gather this kind of feedback. I can conclude that this product doesn't really have any value until proven in a real market:)

Dude we all built one of these and have them running... I'm testing a cohort of 500 strategy profiles with different strategies and geometries on live options. This is not a tool you can sell, what you're doing is not original, and AI makes it so everyone who is interested can do this for less than you'd charge for it. Use it to make yourself money, if it actually works.

Well, port it to MetaTrader and sell it at MetaTrader Market next to all the others. But honestly you are down a very fishy rabbithole regarding that endeavour.

Quoting a hedge fund partner and a Yale professor: “nobody would buy it unless you have at least 1-3 years of live data trading on it, real money connected to broker etc”.

Appreciate it. In your opinion, what should be the first steps? After I feel it is doing a good job and gather more data and info, should I invest in myself first, prove that it is worth it, and actually makes money? I'm assuming after that, I will have the leverage to ask for a larger sum. I don't have sales experience, so I'd appreciate any recommendations.

Make a mql5 EA and trade it yourself. Pretty sure it won't be that profitable

Reasonable, if it continues to give promising results with paper money for the next couple of months, I'm planning to. I guess it will then tell whether it is worth it or not, as I couldn't simulate some of the things.

If you have really made something marvellous then you will not even think of selling it for a real system I know how many analysis of sleepless nights you have to give. For 11 years data its too much if its good dont ever sell .
  19. u/ajdar666 OP 1 1 day ago
If it gives promising results, I might also consider not selling it. I want to let it run for a couple more months with paper money, then decide.

So you’re only gonna sell it if it’s not that good? You just proved everyone’s point of why no one should trust anyone selling something like this.
  21. u/ajdar666 OP 1 1 day ago
What kind of conclusion is this? I don't even know how much people are offering for such tools that are proven to be good. So yes, having everything on the table in a couple of months, I might decide not to sell it and use it myself if it is not worth the money.

Why won’t you put $1000 of your own money behind it?
  23. u/ajdar666 OP 1 1 day ago
I plan to let it run a couple of more months with paper money, accumulate more data before I decide. It is designed to work with 10k+ (15k+ optimally), and it is something that I will still not consider doing. I don't plan to sell it at this moment either. only want to gather info.

Invest real money, build a track record, and then ask your question by showing your data
  25. u/ajdar666 OP 1 1 day ago
After reading a couple of answers, I will consider doing this. I understand 2.5 months is nothing, and 13 trades is nothing for now.

First, I’d recommend showing the performance via a link rather than just a screenshot. Care to share?
  27. u/ajdar666 OP 1 1 day ago
I'm running it on my Raspberry Pi, but the dashboard doesn't show more than this, holdings and closed trades.

Start with real cash and hook it up somewhere where you can show off your stats. I think platforms like ifxhub or mql5 are where you can actually trust drawdown stats

    Sell it on ebay?

I think there are a number of strategy marketplaces but primarily for python scripts (good old MT5 days). We are currently working on an agentic strategies marketplace as an AI social trading extension to our platform. Idea would be that user can essentially copy the skills/strategies of others and we would in exchange share parts of the trading revenues with the strategy creator. I dont think there are great marketplaces, monetization is hard for the creator if they dont want to bear the legal risk and also if you use a different set of assets and potentially broker the PNL could break -> there will be insane "AI trading IP" buil over coming years though so the marketplace has to exist.

Forget the statistics for a second, I'd think harder about who actually buys this. Thirteen trades since May 29 is about five a month, and you're holding for 8.4 days. That's swing trading. The whole reason to automate something is that it does what a person can't or won't, reacting in seconds, holding through the night, never missing an entry because you were asleep. Five trades a month on multi-day holds is something someone could run off a phone alert in ten minutes a week. So you can't sell it as saving them effort. You have to sell it as a good strategy, and that's a much harder thing to prove. Then the money side. $40 expectancy at five trades a month is roughly $200 a month on a $10k account, with 70% of the capital sitting in cash. Whoever buys this is handing you a real chunk of what it makes them. Charge $50 a month and you've taken a quarter of their profit while they carry all the risk. For it to be worth anything to them they'd need to scale the capital up, and that opens a whole set of questions about sizing and liquidity you haven't tested yet. There's also a timeline problem nobody's mentioned. At five trades a month it takes you four or five years to get to 300 closed trades. That's your validation horizon at this frequency, and anyone sophisticated enough to be worth selling to isn't going to wait it out or accept less. On the metrics, the two you led with are the two that lost the room. 85% win rate and 28x profit factor don't read as impressive to people who've been around, they read as warning signs. That profit factor is high because your average loss is $9.49 and you've only had two of them. One normal loser takes it to single digits. So the number is describing your sample size, not your system, and experienced people know that immediately. Expectancy, drawdown, and the full trade list with the losers in it would have gone down much better than what you posted. Worth noticing your max drawdown is 7.67% and your total return is 6.21%. Not damning this early, but it's the thing I looked at before the win rate. Anyway, I'd run it live with real money and let the trade count build until it stops being the first objection anyone raises. But I'd also think hard about whether a five-trade-a-month system has a buyer at all, because that's the harder problem and more data doesn't fix it.

Can it beat the SP500 with less risk?
  33. u/axehind 1 1 day ago
BTW from what you posted, the sample size is way to small to know much of anything about this system. The other thing I’d watch closely is the -7.67% max drawdown. A 7.7% drawdown while ultimately gaining 6.2% is ok at this stage but once the sample size grows, you don't want your drawdown larger than your profit.
