Need advice on paying back debt
Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice from anyone who has worked in the insurance/financial advisory industry in Singapore, especially anyone who has dealt with leaving an agency and having to repay money.
I joined a company p as a financial consultant when I was younger and this was essentially my first proper job. Looking back, I feel that I was heavily encouraged/persuaded to join without fully understanding the financial consequences of leaving early.
I eventually decided that the job wasn’t for me and resigned. After leaving, I was informed that I owe around **S$12,000** due to the contractual repayment/clawback obligations.
I’m not trying to run away from the debt. I accept that I have an outstanding amount and I want to pay it back. My issue is the **repayment period**.
The repayment arrangement currently being offered would require me to pay roughly **S$2.4k per month for 5 months**. That is extremely difficult for me to sustain because my current income isn’t high enough to comfortably absorb a S$2.4k monthly payment on top of my normal living expenses.
I would much rather have something like **S$200–S$500/month over a longer period**, even if it takes several years. I’m willing to make consistent payments; I just don’t want to agree to a repayment amount that I realistically cannot afford and then default.
Has anyone been in a similar situation with the company or another insurance agency?
A few things I’d really appreciate advice on:
• Can I negotiate a significantly longer repayment period?
• Has anyone successfully negotiated something like 2–5 years?
• Should I approach the company directly or the agency/agency leader?
• Would it be worth getting legal advice before agreeing to the repayment terms?
• Is there any organisation in Singapore that can help me negotiate this kind of debt?
• Should I propose my own affordable monthly amount and provide proof of income/expenses?
• Is there anything I should be careful about before signing a repayment agreement?
Again, I’m **not trying to avoid paying the S$12k**. I just want a repayment arrangement that is actually realistic for my financial situation.
Would appreciate any advice, especially from people who have gone through something similar.
